Junior Cup exit by Broadland-GY

Thetford 29,
Broadland-Great Yarmouth 12

IN their Norfolk Junior Cup semi-final B-GY bowed out of the competition after a tough match with a fellow league side.

Despite being the away side the Great Yarmouth team started in a very positive manner, looking to spread the ball quickly and utilise their pace out wide. But they soon found themselves behind with Thetford breaking against the run of play and scoring a long-range try.

Broadland picked themselves up and with good tight running from forwards Rye Bilyard and Kieran Wilkes they set a platform, and after several successful phases Matt Beckett bundled his way over the line (converted Tom Weston.)

Again Broadland took the game to Thetford with centres Mark White and Anthony Payne starting to create gaps in the midfield. However, again Thetford broke from their own half to score.

Broadland dominated territory with Chris Hewitt stopping the Thetford runners making any yards and Tom Weston using his boot well to maintain good position.

Just before half-time Broadland looked to level when flanker Richard Ruddick broke down the blind side, but winger Joe Payne couldn’t quite hold the pass.

Broadland began the second half in similar fashion and dominated territory with fly-half Simon Ruddick utilising the quick ball and releasing wingers Ben Collings and Liam Howlett. However, Broadland couldn’t convert their possession and Thetford increased the lead with a mix of drop goals and penalties.

Eventually the pressure told and good, tight work by Sean Tubby and Asa Morrison set a solid platform for Adam Towfighi to barge his way over the line (unconverted).

Ed Dixon was making big gaps in the Thetford defence but discipline began to cost Broadland and Thetford used the boot to increase the lead. Despite Thetford being down a man after a high tackle on Phil Buckley, Broadland still couldn’t punish the opposition.

Jamie Williams came on to the wing to try and make a breakthrough but was unable to find enough space in a solid defence and eventually time ran out and Thetford celebrated after losing to Broadland twice in the league earlier in the season.

Tomorrow B-GY play host to Dereham in the final league match of the season, 3pm at Chobholm playing fields, Great Yarmouth.
