The Dutchman, who reached the quarter-finals last year, shrugged off eight maximums from his opponent, ending the match with a three-dart average of 99.
Both players started the match superbly, hitting 180s with their opening three darts, but it was Stompe who went on to win the set. King, who produced an impressive performance to beat Matt Clark in the first round, missed chances to break at the start of the second set and Stompe moved 2-0 ahead.
The No 5 seed then pulled a set back but his opponent was in no mood to surrender his advantage, moving 3-1 ahead.
King kept in the hunt by winning the fifth but his Dutch opponent kept his nose in front in the sixth, sealing victory with a two-dart 64 after King had been unable to hit double 16 with three darts.
“I know what Mervyn can do,” said Stompe afterwards. “The way he plays in the practice room is unbelievable, but sometimes he can't bring it on to the stage.”
