Kingfisher duo are boxing champions

KINGFISHER ABC boxers Henri Potter and Curtis Williams won their Eastern Counties Schoolboys' Championship finals, sponsored by the Royal Navy, at Sudbury.

First in the ring was Potter, who won on points over J Burman of Billericay ABC.

The first round was close as both boxers settled down and looked for openings to score with the left jab. A solid right at the end of the round from Potter seemed to stun Burman and he looked glad to hear the bell for the end of the round.

In the second round Potter took the fight to his opponent and was having more success landing good, straight left jabs and again two solid rights. Burman was always game and kept coming back at Potter, but it was Potter who carried the firepower and the round.

In the third and final round Burman knew he was behind on points and tried to take the fight to Potter, but the Kingfisher was ready to stand and fight if he had to, and used his boxing skills by hitting and moving.

His defensive work was good and he was a clear winner with the judges scoring 9-3 in his favour.

Curtis Williams had a close points win over N Tipler of Chalvedon ABC.

From the first bell Williams attacked Tipler and had him on the back foot, forcing him to hold or cover up.

Williams looked too strong for him, but Tipler slowly got himself back in the bout and was trading punches as the bell sounded at the end of the round.

The second round was more even. First one, then the other seemed to have the initiative, both having to hold at times after trading punches.

In the last round Williams was the stronger and kept up the pressure, landing punches to head and body.

A solid right to the head from Williams just before the end of the contest hurt Tipler.

Williams was well on top at the last bell and deserved his points win to become Eastern Counties schoolboy champion and to go through to the next round against the London area champion.
