Woodford 55 Lowestoft & Yarmouth 3

Missing four key members of their pack and still nursing an unexplained lack of confidence, L&Y were bulldozed by a powerful and well-drilled Woodford side.

A solitary Dave Tiueti penalty saved the whitewash but L&Y’s talented back line were never allowed to get into the game as the Woodford forwards dominated all the set phases and gave their backs the platform to score a hatful of tries. L&Y hope to overcome injury and unavailability problems soon in order to get their campaign back on the road soon.

L&Y II 33 Broadland II 0

FOR the first quarter strong runs and determined work at the breakdown from the visitors stifled the ambitions of the pacy L&Y attack, and if it had not been for a superb try-saving tackle from man-of-the-match Pashler, Broadland would have been first to register points.

Having weathered the early storm L&Y began to crank through the gears, with half backs and centres finding their rhythm. A training ground move saw MacArthur release Wright through the centres and on for a good gain. The ball was worked out of contact and through to Lewis coming in from full back to beat the defence with pace and power. The breakthrough helped calm L&Y nerves and the home team started to exert control.

Number eight Hall worked well in his new position anchoring the scrum and made some significant gains with support from Tom Fox and Palmer, but stout defence from Broadland stemmed the tide. It was from the backs that L&Y would next strike, with slick passing from Tom Fox allowing his fly half to execute another training ground move. Outside centre Beer ran a clinical line and sliced through the Broadland defence, releasing wing Palmer to take the honours. The score was 14-0 at half time.

At the interval, flanker Hyde was replaced by McIlroy, having paid for his fearless tackling with a neck injury. The pack became more precise at the breakdown and dominant at the line-out; Pashler and Pack winning opposition ball as well as their own. The improved supply of clean possession gave L&Y a match-winning advantage with good gains coming around the fringes from Greenwood, Burnett and, particularly, from Luc Breij. Hooker Breij was rewarded with a driving try from a breakdown close to the Broadland line. Bowker came off after a good shift for Strachan, who was immediately involved both in attack and defence. Despite a gritty effort, McIlroy succumbed to a shoulder injury to give Wilkinson a run-out. An impressive all-round display (including place kicking) from Lewis Fox on the flank was capped with a try. Veteran player/coach Baker came on at scrum half to help close out the match, before a late breakaway try from Beer.

n Lowestfot and Yarmouth Under 10s won the plate final at the Holt rugby festival. They played matches against North Walsham and Wymondham then pulled out all the stops to beat Holt in the final.
