IN swirling gale-force winds and driving rain L&Y moved up to fourth place in the league. They maintained their excellent home record with a well-deserved and hard-fought win. Dagenham belied their lowly league position with a defensive performance worthy of a top side.

The L&Y pack totally dominated all aspects of set and loose play but once the ball left the forwards it became a lottery for handling in the atrocious conditions. L&Y also defended very well as their opposition remained pointless for the second week running.

The home front row of Titterington, Nixon and Bristo were far too strong for their opposite numbers and with Coleman dominating the line-outs possession was rare for the visitors.

Titterington made the first foray into the Dagenham half when following a 30-yard driving run the ball went to Nelson who kicked ahead and a five- yard scrum was awarded after the ball was carried over. A penalty resulted and it was narrowly missed by Bloxham. After 20 minutes of home domination L&Y were again rewarded with a penalty and this time Bloxham made no mistake.

L&Y's first try came late in the half when Coleman took clean lineout ball and, following an impressive 35-yard driving maul, his fellow second row Wilkinson broke off and was stopped just short albeit illegally. From the penalty L&Y opted for a five-yard scrum and skipper Thomas touched down as they drove over. Bloxham put over an excellent conversion for 10-0.

Second half it was another fine Coleman line-out take that led to the second try as again the pack drove forward a rolling maul from some 35 yards out and were stopped just short of the line. Two scrums were awarded in quick succession and from the second Thomas again touched down.

Matthew Scott came off the bench to make his L&Y debut and Howell and McElroy also had game time.

The Wine Lodge man of the match was the L&Y front row.
