Lowestoft & Yarmouth entertain Wymondham Saturday and will be hoping to continue their good form. A great win against fourth-placed Wanstead 39-3 has made selection difficult for the playing committee and has resulted in two regular first-team starters moving down to the second XV.

Scott Nelson said: “It’s great to have a full squad to pick from at this point of the season and some lads will be disappointed with the selection, but it’s how they respond that is important. It’s great for all the players to have some competition and hopefully nobody gets complacent.”

The front row that got the better of Wanstead remains unchanged as does the second-row partnership of impressive Callum Cashman and club captain Russell Wilkinson.

The back row shows one change with Jan Scheijde moving to the bench and Steve Adams getting the start. Steve Powles continues at blindside flank after a man-of-the match performance against Wanstead that earned him a meal for two at Duke’s Head, Somerleyton.

Russell Chapman should be fine at half-back after a nasty gash to his ear received in a tackle against Wanstead resulted in four stitches. Scott Nelson continues at 10 with his centre’s Josh Fewkes and Myles McAlone really starting to find some form and working well together. Young full-back Tom Dare continues after two solid performances, and the wings remain unchanged.

Squad: Graeme Newton, Chris Howe, Jake Titterington, Russell Wilkinson, Callum Cashman, Steve Powles, Steve Adams, Marc Thomas (captain), Russell Chapman, Scott Nelson, Joshua Fewkes, Myles McAlone, Kristen Taylor-Crisp, Dave Palmer, Tom Dare, Richard Bristo, Ryan Oakes, Jan Scheijde.

Lowestoft & Yarmouth 39, Wanstead 3

L&Y remained at the top of London 3NE with a five-try demolition of fellow contenders Wanstead and a superb display of 15-man rugby.

L&Y were transformed against a side who ran them ragged earlier in the season. Wanstead remained the dangerous and well-drilled side of three months ago, however they were simply out-powered and out-thought.

The visitors went ahead with a fine 42-metre kick from their full-back, but L&Y scrum half Russ Chapman soon levelled with the first of his six successful kicks at goal.

Around the quarter mark a line-out drive enabled Marc Thomas to wriggle over for the first try, converted by Chapman.

The scrum-half got the second score himself after a huge drive by L&Y on a Wanstead scrum allowed him to snaffle the ball from his opposite number, interpass with the supporting Steve Powles, chip ahead and touch down for an 18-3 half-time lead.

The pressure the home side was exerting both in defence and attack was to be the key factor in the second half. A wonderful passage of play involving runs from Tom Dare, Callum Cashman and Jake Titterington led to Scott Nelson sending Josh Fewkes through for a deserved score.

Nelson was provider for the next try when midfield pressure defence caused a fumble. He scooped up the ball and sent Myles McAlone racing free from 50m with a sharp inside pass.

To wrap up the game McAlone got his second try when a late Wanstead attempt to run out from their line was intercepted and he trotted over unopposed.
