L&Y win keeps them top of table

Bancrofts 17, Lowestoft & Yarmouth 48.

L&Y continued their run as the county’s most successful club of the season with another bonus victory to keep them top of London 3NE.

The team arrived five minutes before kick-off to the news that the Essex team had bolstered their ranks with five new recruits from Dagenham. But L&Y proceeded to drub the home team by seven tries to two late consolation scores.

The score-line could easily have been more had they concentrated for longer periods and kept a bit more structure, plus play-maker, head coach Scott Nelson, retired just after half-time when the bonus point was in the bag, to observe a reshuffled line-up from the sideline.

Russ Chapman got the ball rolling with a penalty after powerful runs by Jake Titterington and Marc Thomas. Bancrofts missed a penalty before Russ Wilkinson scored a birthday try after centres Myles McAlone and Josh Fewkes set up position for hooker Chris Howe to release him.

Ryan Oakes and Steve Powles combined well for the second try, both involved twice in a length of the field play, which Powles finished off. Bancrofts converted a penalty, then some powerful forward play earned L&Y field position in the home 22, where exquisite handling by Nelson and Chapman gave McAlone the space to round the defence on the right.

After the break, Kristan Taylor Crisp set up the bonus point try with a scything run from deep, before Nelson and Powles swapped passes for the coach to finish off and then depart.

With Simon Coleman as replacement, both forwards and backs were shuffled around and the disruption took some time to settle. A driven maul was hauled down on the Bancroft line, so rightly L&Y were awarded a penalty try, but shortly afterwards the Bancroft 13 scored an opportunist try by collecting a smart chip over the defence.

L&Y replied with a devastating 50-metre driven maul which led to skipper Thomas touching down. Bancroft hit back when their winger took a quick tapped penalty and left the retreating tired defenders for dead, and Thomas rounded off the match with his second try off the back of another dominant five-metre scrummage. Chapman converted five of the tries to add to his earlier penalty.

Team: Newton (Bristo), Howe, Titterington, Wilkinson, Oakes, Powles (Scheijde), Adams, Thomas, Chapman, Nelson (Coleman), Taylor Crisp, Fewkes, McAlone, Palmer, Dare.

Tries: Wilkinson, Powles, McAlone, Nelson, penalty, Thomas (2). Penalties: Chapman. Conversions: Chapman (5).
