A PETER Lambert hat-trick, his first for the club, helped get the Greens' Ridgeons Division One promotion bid back on track.

Tomorrow, they entertain fourth-placed Hadleigh (3pm) who are five points better off (44) having played three games more (25). The third promotion spot is occupied by Diss Town, also with 44 points from 25 games.

On a difficult surface, Gorleston secured their first ever league points at Bearscroft Lane in a topsy-turvy encounter.

They had the ball in the net in the third minute, but Lambert's flicked header from Ricci Butler's cross-field ball was ruled offside. Jack Marsden shot wide from distance, however in their first attack, and against the run of play, Godmanchester took the lead.

A clumsy tackle from Eddie Thompson brought down Steve Thompson, and Paul Bass scored the opener from the spot.

Gorleston had penalty claims of their own waved away when Butler looked to have been bundled over in the box.

Greens' keeper Tom Marsden got down well to save in a crowded area and then had to punch away an effort from Thompson before Rob Stamper headed wide at the far post.

Ten minutes before the break Gorleston were back on terms. Lambert swivelled and shot into the top left hand corner from 10 yards.

Four minutes later John Bell found Butler but keeper Mark White produced a fine save. From the corner Lambert sent a bullet header into the top right corner to give the Greens the lead.

But before the break Haydn Beasley crossed for Bass to head home the equaliser at the far post.

Four minutes into the second half Gorleston took the lead for the second time. Bell's corner from the left was headed home by Lambert.

The game turned again. Kyle Howell appeared to have been fouled in the right back position by Steve Thompson, but the referee failed to blow up and Thompson crossed low for Lee Boon to roll in the equaliser at the far post.

With just under 20 minutes remaining Bell was replaced by Danny Western, and it proved an inspired move as within seconds Western was thumping the winner past White from 25 yards with his first touch.
