AFTER narrowly missing a brilliant team double Browning/Pownalls skipper Tony Anderson insisted their season had been “a triumph”.

The outfit who won the Norwich and district team championship on the rivers Bure and Thurne went into the final round of the Suffolk teams of five tournament, staged on the West Norfolk Cross Drove Fishery on Sunday, as clear under dogs, four league points adrift of long time leaders Deben Select. But on the day the Regents Road-based squad pulled out all the right stops with Mark Haverson heading the individual list with 34lb 15oz and Anderson making third with 31lb 1oz, and it then became apparent they were closing on the leaders, writes Roy Webster.

The team finished joint top with Big Hits with a score of 11 penalty points while the Suffolk leaders plunged to fourth spot on a day when the luck of the draw could make or break.

If the series had been decided on aggregate penalty points B/P may well have been crowned champions. The Great Yarmouth outfit had to be content with runners-up spot, their league points 64 against Deben's 65.

There is hardly a week when members of the group have failed to appear in the match results published by the national angling newspapers.

The decision by Steve Pownall to arrange sponsorship along with Browning for this genial collection of match anglers has clearly paid off. And soon after the team had won the Norwich Summer League he commented: “I am very proud to be part of this success story, these lads have done us proud.”

Suffolk League table: Deben Select 65, Browning/Pownalls 64, DAD Black 48, DAD Red 47, Big Hits 42, DAD Pink 41.

The Great Yarmouth Individual League ended with former Yarmouth national team man Robert Hubbard the series winner for the formidable eight-match aggregate of 270lb 13oz that included his magnificent roach catch of 55lb 10oz. Nick Larkin, of Nisa Waveney, was runner-up with 266lb 3oz.

Details released by organiser Keith Ford revealed that match attendance was well up on previous seasons due to the magnificent form of the Beachamp

Arms prolific venue where bream and quality roach bulged keep nets through the series.

Final round result: N Larkin (Nisa Waveney) 17lb 6oz, K Humphries (Suffolk DAD) 13lb, K Ford (Yarmouth) 12lb 8oz. Other match results: Burgh Castle open L Arnold 26lb 4oz, M Carpenter 25lb 12oz, R Silverwood 22lb 10oz.
