The Men’s Monthly Medal played at the weekend was the qualifying event for the Drughorn Cup knockout competition with the top 16 nett scorers who entered going forward to compete.

With the morning weather cold, wet and windy, conditions were challenging to say the least and credit must go to those who posted good scores. The improvement in conditions later in the day was emphasised by the fact that eight of the 16 players who played in the afternoon qualified for the Drughorn Cup.

Winner in Division One with a nett 70 was Paul Platten whilst in Division Two Trevor Myhill posted the best nett score of the day with a fine 68 and Division Three winner was Steven Blake also scoring nett 70.

Better conditions prevailed for the Ladies in midweek for their Divisional Stableford with Maureen Dark taking the honours in Division One with 38 points.

Terrie Collingwood was best in Division Two with 39 points but the round of the day was in Division Three by Sheena Emrick with an excellent 42 points which also captured the Clayton Cup.

Jim Clarke and Andrew Woodcock each with 40 points were the divisional winners in the Men’s Midweek Stableford. Mark Morgan was invited to compete in the recent Bungay Invitation Day by Bungay member John Eason and the pair duly won the fourball better ball event with an impressive 43 points. Mark will no doubt reciprocate the invite and hope to do the double when the Gorleston Invitation Day is held in August.

Colin Cairns was the recent victor of the Seniors Three Score Year & Ten Cup after a fine display saw him beat Bill Haykin into second place and was delighted to win a first-ever trophy, proving that age is no barrier to success on the golf course.

Alex Holmes’s competitive debut in Northern Ireland was unsuccessful with rounds of 80 and 76 which saw him miss the cut and catch an early flight home to prepare for the Kerry London event which starts today at Burhill Golf Club, Walton-on-Thames. On Sunday five members will be in action at Halesworth competing for the Suffolk Amateur Championship looking to win the coveted Wood Cup and a place in the English County Champions Tournament at Woodhall Spa in September. At the club this weekend the ever popular Famous Grouse Foursomes will be competed for whilst on Tuesday the Senior’s team welcome Flempton for the second round of the Parks Trophy.
