Malta Cup decided

BOWLS: The Lovewell Blake Malta Cup League Finals were held on the Brittania Greens on Sunday with a strong north westerly wind making for difficult conditions.

In the first semi-final Acle A had to play Acle B, which looked an easy route for the A Team who just won the Norfolk County EBA Championship and lost only one game in that league.

However, Acle B team won east one in the County EBA League and only lost in the play-offs for a place in the Premier Division by three shots.

The other semi-final was between Caister and Freethorpe A.

Freethorpe names first: A Moll, J Harris, L Moore 25; T Armes, P Barber, B Harris 18. M Harris, T Roberts, W Willimott 15; G Punchard, D Grimmer, B Wymer 20. J Cater, C Goodrum, D Noble 16; C Roper, K Pawsey, C Punchard 12. K Taylor, R Church, R Parker 22; G Middleton, B Hipgrave, J Long 13. Result Freethorpe 78, Caister 63.

In the final, a repeat of 2009, Acle A played Freethorpe A.

Acle A skips names first: R Meeks 18, D Noble 13; D Rowsell 30, W Willimott 9; D Goodley 16, L Moore 17; A Siely 14, R Parker 14.

Acle A retained the trophy for the seventh consecutive year.

Freethorpe Ladies, who won the Ladies' League, played a representative team from the league and won 51-29. All players received a commemorative trophy from Arthur Savoury who sponsored the ladies' match.

Caister and Acle B played for third and fourth place which Caister won.

Cups and cheques were presented by the league chairman Ray Meeks who thanked league secretary Derek Webster, sponsors Lovewell Blake, umpires and the committee for another successful year.

Bradwell Bowling Club

Twenty-nine bowlers played in the Saturday drive and the top scores were close. Geoff Tingay, the winner, achieved 27-10. Runner-up was Paul Lown scoring 24-17 and third Stan Hopwood, 23-15.

The club has a full programme still, including friendly matches. On Monday a team from Carshalton Beaches will play at Green Lane and on Friday, August 27 another touring side will be welcomed, from St Albans.

The club's annual Ladies v Gents match will be played on Saturday, August 28 and the Coronation Cup singles tournament will take place on Monday, August 30.

Caister Bowls Club

In their last EBA Malta Cup match of the season Caister played Acle B at Acle and won 5�-1�. With this win Caister finished top of Division Two. In the play-offs at Yarmouh on Sunday Caister finshed in third place.

Caister Castaways in their last Federation County League match of the season playing away at Hemsby won 49-43 (7-2).

Caister Centurions had two games first at home to Bradwell Greens losing 52-9 (0-9) and then away at Acle losing 48-52 (4-5).

In the Great Yarmouth and District League, Caister A had two games, at home to Acle losing 52-98 (�-6�) and at Fleggburgh Private winning 96-49 (7-0).

Ormesby Bowls Club

Members of Ormesby Bowls Club were sad to hear of the death of its long-serving president, Albert Holmes.

Albert had been an active member of the club for many years. As well as being an excellent bowler he helped maintain the bowling green and also supported the club through its many social events, especially the annual dinner to which he brought his whole family.

The thoughts, sympathy and fond memories of members and friends go out to his family. The funeral will be held at Gorleston Crematorium on Thursday, August 26 at 12.40pm.

In the Three Wood Federation, Ormesby Blue team had a disappointing evening losing away to Bradwell 43-74 (2-7). Two blocks lost heavily. The Ormesby winning block was R Vincent, M Chegwidden and D Humphries 20-18.

The Federation Ormesby Red team fared better with a good win at Hickling. Winning on all three rinks the score was 68-34 (9-0). M Hart, K Scott Greenard and P Evans 25-8, K Hunt, S Brooker and C Brooker 24-13 and J Bratton, R Myers and F Brumby 19-13.

The nine points gives Ormesby 57� points in the league moving them clear of Hickling and into sixth place.

In the Great Yarmouth and District League, Ormesby A team lost to Burlingham 55-82 (2-5). Best Ormesby block J Farrow, C Fortescue and J Fortescue 25-16. They also lost to Runham 55-95 (1-6). Best Ormesby block B Rafferty, J Jenkins and J Fortescue, 16-15.

They also lost to Acle 74-84 (1-6). Best Ormesby block S Ridpath, K Scott Greenard and S Brooker 28-17. Against Caister they lost 57-92 (0-7). Best block J Baxter, M Clutterbuck and P Clutterbuck 20-21.

The Ormesby B team lost away at Gorleston 48-100 (0-7).

Michelle and Paul Clutterbuck, Helen and John Farrow, Frank Shaw, Stan Ridpath, Richard Pope and Ian Williams have reached the final of the Super Six for the first time and represent Ormesby at Mundesley Haig Bowls Club on Sunday.

Rollesby Bowls Club

Rollesby welcomed South Walsham Mallards in a County League three wood match and despite losing narrowly 12-14 on one rink, enjoyed comfortable wins on the remaining rinks - T Bolton, J Seeranj, R Blunden 25-9 and M Coots, J Wheaton, T Coots 24-14 - to record a 61-37 overall score and a 7-2 points victory.

At home in the Yarmouth League against Fleggburgh Private, and still seeking points to ensure first division status, Rollesby gained a valuable 6-1 points win with an overall score of 90-57, S Allen, T Wright, E Taylor 20-15; J Temple, B Temple, J Catchpole 18-17; and a resounding 37-5 by J Avery, A Palmer, T Avery.

Away against Buxton in the Duffield League, despite losing on two rinks, the wins of 18-11 by S Allen, J Beeston, T Wilkin and the comprehensive 26-5 by J Seeranj, A Christie, D Gammon were enough to bring a 6-4 points win, overall score 76-48.

Against Martham A at home, J Avery, J Palmer and T Avery scraped a 17-17 draw with five shots in the last two ends and S Allen, T Wright and E Taylor recorded the narrowest of wins 21-20, again scoring four shots in the last two ends.

The remaining blocks both lost by seven shots. Only 1� points, overall score 75-88.

At Horning in the Duffield League, Rollesby had another 6-4 points win, overall score 64-47. Winning blocks, J Mason, A Christie, T Wilkin 18-9 and J Temple, J Wheaton, B Temple 28-8.

Rollesby Bowls Club are holding a three wood pairs open tournament on Sunday, August 22 at 2 pm, sponsored by new local venture, The Waterside.

Entrance fee is �2 per person, with cash prizes, refreshments and raffle.
