Great Yarmouth Town 3, Debenham LC 0

A convincing performance from the Bloaters saw them retain sixth position in the Ridgeons Division One race for the realistic third promotion place.

It is odds on for Newmarket and Hadleigh to take the first two places, with the chasing seven clubs locked in a battle to join them. FC Clacton look to be in the strongest position with five games in hand over some of their rivals, and it is Clacton away for Kevin Cruickshank's Bloaters tomorrow, writes Arthur Fisk.

Against Debenham, Cruickshank fielded four of his U18 squad after call-offs. However, every player did the club proud. Yarmouth looked sharp in all departments. Evergreen Stuart Roach had a superb game up front, notching one goal and very unlucky not to have clinched a hat-trick, mainly due to some excellent keeping from Johnson.

One feature was the telling long throw-ins from Adam Sewell into the penalty area.

The best early chance fell to Debenham when Powting fired a stinging volley over the bar.

Yarmouth looked well in control and Scott Woodcock hammered the ball home between the keeper and near post.

The job of marking Roach was given to a little tenacious midfield player Holt. Roach took a bit of a battering, kept his cool and came out on top, notching that goal and earning himself man of the match honours. Holt did finally go into the referee's notebook.

Roach rubbed it in on 25 minutes. A well delivered free-kick from Woodcock into the box saw Roach rise above his markers to score with a brilliant header.

Yarmouth were never really troubled in the first half, their defence superb with Watts, Bryanton, Gorbold, Ager and Darby not putting a foot wrong for a 10th clean sheet of the season.

The second half saw a much more spirited Debenham but the Bloaters play good passing football when they are under pressure.

Yarmouth's third goal was pure simplicity. A cheeky toe punt over the defence from a tightly-marked Woodcock found Roach in the box. Roach unselfishly set up Mark Thompson to slot the ball home.

A good sound win for the Bloaters watched by 87 spectators.
