IT was an aim they thought was beyond them, but a group of darts players are celebrating a superb winning streak.

Willie Nichols, Alex Betts, Jon Wynn and Gordon Bristo have got used to success when stepping up to the oche this season, writes Miles Jermy.

The four were part of title-winning teams for the Albert Tavern in the Burgh Hall Friendly League and Caister Community Centre in the Flegg League.

Their amazing sequence of 41 matches unbeaten stretches back to last season and has seen them gain 32 wins and nine draws.

Willie Nichols said: “I put our success down to many things, like having the right balance in the team, a mixture of good young and experienced players, dedication, and of course, like any other sport, a bit of luck.

“I remember we were playing at the Magdalen Arms and found ourselves 6-3 games down with three games to go, and we won those games to get a draw.

“A lot of credit must go to the other players in our two teams, as without them we wouldn't have this wonderful run, everyone has played their part.”

It is the best ever set of results for Nichols, 60, who started playing as a 17-year-old. Fellow team veteran Bristo, is a familiar face on the local darts scene and once competed in the News of the World finals at the old Alexandra Palace.

Completing the line-up are up and coming talents of 26-year-old Wynn and Betts, 27, who only took up the game last summer.

Now the team are hoping to carry that success forward into the summer league which started this week.
