Medal joy for sprinter Dominic
Dominic Burnham spearheaded the Great Yarmouth & District Athletic Club contingent selected to represent Norfolk at the southern inter-counties championships at Abingdon near Oxford with a medal-winning performance.
The event was a great chance for athletes to gain experience and possibly shine at a very high level of competition. Dominic, an U15 boy who has been showing top form this year, winning both the 100/200m titles at the county championships with some impressive times was hoping this would be the case.
The conditions were really tough with very strong head winds which meant good times were virtually impossible.
In the 100m a fourth place in the heats gave him a place in the final where he finished in 6th place in 12.05.
In the 200m his 2nd place in the heats, earned him a place in the final. The final was a very close-fought race and Dominic finished in 3rd place in 23.98.
This was just reward for his great efforts to come away with a bronze medal.
With national competitions coming up soon this will be a real confidence booster.

In the U15 girls age group the club had three competitors Phoebe Baker, who again won the 100/200m titles in the county championships, put in two good runs in the heats with a 6th place in the 100m (13.96) and a 4th place in the 200m (27.84) just missing out on a place in the final.
Jasmin Kemp, competing in the shot, threw 8.62m for 12th place and Ella Wakeley finished 12th in the discus throwing 18.57m a personal best.
Shane Atherton competing in the U20 championships in the 100m heats ran 12.47 for 7th place and 24.38 for 8th place in the 200m.
This was a great competition for these athletes. It was just a shame the weather was not kinder.
