It was a mixed week for Great Yarmouth Town with a victory and a defeat against two contrasting sides.

The Bloaters retained the Michael Wright Cup when they defeated hosts Sheringham 3-0 last Thursday.

Fernando Vide and Mitch Forbes, who was rejoining the club from Gorleston, were making their first appearances of the season as well as trialist Simeon Adewale. Adey Agar featured in the Sheringham side having left the Bloaters during the pre-season.

Two first-half goals from Scott Woodcock and Vide and a second-half strike by Martin Goulder were enough to see off their Anglian Combination opponents.

On Saturday the Bloaters hosted Peterborough Northern Star from the United Counties League Premier Division. Joe Clark from Lowestoft Town made his debut for the Bloaters and hopefully will be joining the club on loan this season.

Two second-half goals, one gifted by a poor back pass which didn’t reach the keeper, and one which looked suspiciously offside, sunk Yarmouth – but on the balance of play the visitors deserved their victory.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult game, as Boony (King’s Lynn Town manager) had informed me they were one of the best footballing sides in their league.

“They were in our face all the time and rarely let us settle,” manager Paul Tong said after the game. “But credit to the boys, they kept at it and with a bit of luck could have sneaked a draw.”

Tomorrow, the first team are without a game but travel to near neighbours Caister on Tuesday for the Simon Scott-Greenard Trophy game. Kick-off is 6:30pm.

This will be the final pre-season friendly as the league campaign starts on Saturday, August 13 with a trip to Hadleigh United.

The Reserves took a young side including a couple of triallists to Blofield United on Tuesday evening.

Despite the 7-2 reverse against the Anglian Combination Premier Division side, with goals from Tommy Gardiner and Martin Goulder, the match was a good work-out.

The club is looking for volunteers to help during the season.

The club is proud to be a FA Charter Standard Club and is now looking to forge even stronger links with the local community by running coaching sessions for youth players and working closely with local schools, thereby further strengthening the club’s flourishing youth team set up.

Often a job can be large or small and can be adapted to fit in with the time you have available and we are looking for people who would willingly give some time to helping the Club.

If you can help please contact the chairman Colin Jones on 07872-121942 or assistant club secretary Kevin Smith on 01493-300290 (home) or 07914-419156 (mobile).

Jimmy Case is comiong to the Talk of the Town (Clubhouse) on Thursday, August 18 at 7:30pm.

Liverpool legend Case has been voted as 45th in Liverpool’s all-time greats and was an FA Cup finalist and UEFA winner and has a number of league titles and European Cup wins.

Sheringham 0, Great Yarmouth Town 3

The Bloaters retained the Michael Wright Cup with a comfortable victory over hosts Sheringham on Thursday evening with goals from Scott Woodcock, Fernando Vide and Martin Goulder.

On 30 minutes the Bloaters took a deserved lead when a quick free-kick caught out the home defence and Woodcock was on hand to slot the ball home past a retreating keeper.

On the stroke on half-time the Bloaters doubled their lead. Vide cut in from the wing and his first shot was blocked by the keeper only for the ball to rebound back to Vide whose second shot was blasted into the far corner of the goal.

Spooner missed two chances to increase the lead when he clipped the top of the bar with one shot and shot straight at the keeper with another, but Yarmouth made the game safe in the 85th minute Goulder side footed the ball into an empty net from a cross by Woodcock.

Yarmouth: J Jessup, J Page, E Short, G Palmer, C Duffy, R Catchpole, F Vide, J Miller, G Spooner, M Forbes, S Woodcock. Subs: M Goulder (Vide 57mins), S Adewale (Forbes 57mins), T Clark (Duffy 62mins), G Barnden (Miller 62mins). Scorers: Woodcock 30mins, Vide 44mins, Goulder 85mins.

Great Yarmouth Town 0, Peterborough Northern Star 2

The Bloaters made two changes from the side which retained the Michael Wright Cup at Sheringham with Bobby Hills replacing Gareth Palmer and Joe Clark, a prospective loan signing from Lowestoft Town in for Mitch Forbes.

The 0-0 scoreline at half-time was a fair reflection of the game.

The second half started with Peterborough again applying pressure which paid off within two minutes. Hills, under pressure from an attacker, underhit a pass back to keeper Jessup and the forward place the ball past the advancing Jessup to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Then, on 76 minutes Catchpole conceded needless free-kick just outside the home side’s penalty area. From the resultant kick, Jessup was balked by an attacker who looked in an offside position who headed the ball into an unguarded net. Despite the Bloaters’ protests the goal was allowed to stand by the referee.

Yarmouth: J Jessup, J Page, E Short, B Hills, C Duffy, R Catchpole, F Vide, J Miller, G Spooner, J Clark, S Woodcock. Subs: M Goulder (Woodcock 64mins), S Steer (Vide 60mins), S Jones (Hills 60mins), S Adewale (Spooner 64mins), A Haworth (Miller 64mins).
