Moore seeks Welsh bowls title

WITH the Potters World Singles over, the top players now head for Swansea to play in the Welsh International Open Championships. The first games are tomorrow and among them will be one of Acle Indoor's young players, Lewis Moore. He will be playing Irishman Johnathan Ross, who lost to Greg Harlow at Potters in the third round.

If Lewis can win this game he, like his team mate Tim Stone in the world championships, will almost certainly have to play fellow Norfolk man Mervyn King (Fakenham Gallow) in the second round.

Lewis qualified last year for this event and is having a successful season, and will be skipping his rink for Norfolk in the National Under-25s double rinks final.

Acle Ladies played Lincoln and District in the national quarter-final of the Vivienne Trophy.

At Lincoln on a very quick and tricky surface Ann Drury's rink recovered from 12-21 down to finish 16-25 and Jenny Kirby's rink were 9-10 down after 15 ends won 17-12.

At Acle, Ros Myhill's rink after scoring two fives were 17-6 up at 12 ends but were pegged back to win by one shot 20-19. Amy Brooks' rink were 9-16 down after 15 ends and lost 14-21.

Result: 67-77. The girls must hold their heads high to have reached the national quarter-final.

The Ladies' A team went to Pinewood and were hoping for points to keep top of the table.

Joy Pearson, Elaine Cole and Geraldine Reeve were 10-3 up after five ends, 15-5 after eight and only dropped shots on five ends in their 19-9 win. Jill Saunders, Lillian Barber and Melanie Haylettt were 6-2 up after five ends, 8-6 after 10 and in a closely-fought contest won 10-7.

Margaret Arnold, Jenny Stone and Barbara Meeks were 5-0 up after two ends, 6-9 down after seven but from here Barbara looked triumphant as they won 13-12. Marie Barker's block dropped an eight on the first end came back to 5-9 after five ends but it all went pear-shaped as they lost 9-26. Result: 51-54 and 3-5 points.

Away to Bowling Club the Men's A team needed to win to keep up the chase for the title.

Will Pitt, Daniel Noble, Tony Dunton and Lewis Moore were 0-8 down after five ends and 6-15 after 11 but came back to 18 each at 19 ends and won 20-19. Mark Elliott, Rob Parker, Jamie Howlett and Robin Norman were also 0-8 down, after six ends, came back to 11 each after 16 ends and finished by winning the final two ends for a 16-15 victory.

John Colcombe, Paul Webb, Simon Elliott and Tim Stone, after dropping a five on the sixth end, were 4-10 down after 8, 11-10 after 12, 12-15 after 17 but here again dominated the last ends to win 22-15. George Tubby's rink were 4-12 down after 11 ends and 8-22 after 17, despite winning the last three ends the game stuttered to a halt at 11-23. Result: 69-72 and 3-4 points.

At home to The Dell the Men's B team needed a win to avoid slipping down the table.

Brian Shorten, Pat Garrod, Eric George and Alan Rowsell scored a five on the second end another five on the fourth and by 10 ends were 22-3 up with all four players in top form and skip Alan's six shots on the 13th end added to the opposition misery and the score finished 44-6.

David Cole, Jim Pearson, John Harris and Eric Crouch were finding opposing skip Ray Lusted saving shots every end. After being five each at eight ends they found themselves 6-13 down after 14 but in a grandstand finish won 16-15. Johnstone Mackie, Sid Siely. Barry Barker and Bimbo Meeks were 5-12 down after eight ends, 13-14 after 12 then 13-19 after 16 but they came back to win 23-22.

Ken Copeman's rink after dropping a six on the ninth were 2-22 down. After 12 it was 5-29 but after 16 ends it was 17-29, but it was too late and they lost 20-35.

Result: 103-78 and 6-1 deserved points.

Browston Bowls Club

The men's A team took six points from their home game against Hunstanton A which gives them a half point lead over Lakeside at the top of Division Two.

V Moore, T Gowen, P Aldis and M French picked up a six and two fives in a high-scoring game to win 37-10. P Hurren, K Leech, R Kippen and J Burwood took two sixes in the first half and further consistent scoring led to a 30-16 win.

D Pratt, E MacDonald, V Bloom and J Malcolm 9-12 down at the eleventh, then picked up a six (15-11) and kept in front to win 24-15.

The ladies B team at home to Shotford B won 60-35 and picked up seven points.

Chris Butt, Doreen Younger and Barbara Cheverton raced to a commanding lead, at seven ends 16-4 up, then only allowed their opponents to score a further four shots and won 25-8. Eileen Newberry, Doreen Ellis and Joyce Harvey 11-6 up at the sixth after dropping a five, then scoring five singles and a treble to the oppositions single and won 19-7.

Dorothy Bennett, Pat Smith and Pearl Jermy picked up four shots on the tenth end to go 9-8 up in the following ends each side scored two shots resulting in a narrow win for the home side 11-10.

The ladies A team only managed one point in their away game against Wymondham B.

Ilene Hadden, Doreen Ellis and Wyn Rumbold lost a four on the first end, but by the seventh end were 9-5 up, and then only scored a further four shots whilst their opponents came back to level the 13-13 (�pt).

In a similar game Shirley Aldis, Diane Burwood and Pat Drinkall went into an early lead 9-5 up at halfway, then only scored a further three shots to their opponents seven and ended up all square at 12-12 (�pt).
