Martham club members fished their Christmas fair competition after clearing ice from the Ferry Boat dyke, writes Roy Webster.

Terry Cranfield scaled a winning 3lb 12oz followed by Roger Wells 3lb 4oz and Peter Beck 3lb.

At the Burgh Castle fishery mechanical aerators kept the water ice-free but with the thermometer remaining at minus 3C, pole elastic seized up and anglers were constantly defrosting their equipment. Karl Hodgins won with 1lb 9oz, D Ransome 1lb 2oz, G Hunter 5oz.

This fishery will be closed on Christmas and Boxing Day.

Hall Farm lake, Burgh Castle was also open for angling and will remain so every day during the holiday break.

Hickling Broad was frozen over and like many more still waters angling will be out of the question this week unless a sudden thaw sets in.

Best results so far at the weekend were reported from local beaches with Hopton named as the hottest spot for cod that ranged to double figures.

Fresh water match anglers can still obtain tickets for the river Wensum Jim Boulton Memorial event on Boxing Day and for the New Years day Linda Thompson Memorial. Entry for both 01603 400973.

Last Sunday's open event produced a joint winning catch of 13lb 3oz from this reliable river Wensum match venue.
