Yarmouth and Caister GC

Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf Club paid tribute to its elected captains for 2013.

The Club Captain Rodney Beckett and the captain of the ladies section Jeni Rose drove in ahead of a massive field for a festive Texas scramble.

The captains used the centenary driver presented to the club to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 1982.

These were not the best drives Rodney or Jeni have hit in their golfing careers but after careful measurement it was the ladies section that were doing the most cheering.

The winning tickets for the captain’s drive-in were held by John Tweed and Jason Dent who both received a festive prize. A very competitive field of golfers battled hard in the winter sunshine with some terrific scoring, 18 slick greens and a links course playing magnificently well.

The winning team consisted of Tom Rutherford, Tom Gilbert, James Ollington and Will Johnson who shot an incredible gross 10 under par 60 netting down to a 56.9 shots.

The runners-up were Richard Betts, Josh Brooks, Colin Lord and Glyn Chapman with a net score of 59.

Individual prizes were won by Jean Johnson for nearest the pin on the 7th. Richard Betts was nearest the pin on the 12th.

Steve Greatrex was nearest the pin on the 14th (half a turn away from a very expensive hole in one), Nearest the pin on the 17th was past captain and past president Richard Masterson showing a pleasing return to form.

Nearest the pin in two on the second was Alex Fellas.

The captains’ team had played well and defeated most of the other teams who had to dig deep into their pockets to contribute to the captains’ charities for being beaten.

At a packed presentation the captain thanked the members who took part and wished them the compliments of season and all the best for a great golfing New Year.

Afterwards a pint, a hot roast roll and much merry-making got the festive season at Caister off to a tremendous start.
