The first handball club in east Norfolk is starting up this summer. Great Yarmouth Handball and Fitness Club is open to men, women and children aged seven and over.

Club founder Rachel Brown says: “I'm setting the club up because I felt the area needed something different in sport. I love handball myself, and saw the potential of improved fitness and great fun with the game.”

She is studying for a degree in sport, fitness and management. She plans to set up handball clubs across the region, including clubs in Norwich and Lowestoft so that members can play competitively in a league.

Handball is a non-contact sport consisting of two teams, each having five to 14 players who throw a slightly weighted ball into the opponents' net. The ball can be bounced or thrown, and the team in control of the ball must always be attacking the opponents' goal and area, resulting in quite a fast-paced game.

Weekly training includes a fitness session and a team handball game. The club will meet every Monday at 6.30pm at Cliff Park High School, Gorleston. The first session is on Monday, July 13. It will also meet every Sunday at 11.30am at York Road Drill Hall, Great Yarmouth, starting from Sunday, August 9. The first session is free and the club offers large family discounts.
