Great Yarmouth Town have signed defender Steve Best from Ridgeons Premier side Mildenhall Town, and the former Diss Town player goes straight into the squad for tomorrow's game at home to March Town United (3), writes Gerry Brown.

Since moving up to Norfolk from Sussex where he played for Horsham YMCA, Best, now 29, has been signed by two ex-Norwich City professionals, Robert Fleck at Diss and then Simon Charlton at Mildenhall.

The Canary connection continues now at the Wellesley with Paul Tong as his latest boss, having already played for him at Diss.

Three years at Brewers Green Lane saw Best, who was made team captain by Tong, operate first as a centre-back before a brief flirtation with a striker role: “I scored a few goals but, to be honest, I was happier in a defensive role. But I learned a few things about strikers that now help me as a central defender.”

Having transferred from Diss to Mildenhall last summer, Best made 16 first team appearances this season but never settled into the first team and was selected as a substitute as often as a starting player. “When Tongy asked me to rejoin him at Yarmouth I was more than happy to agree. He has a basically young side and I would like to think my experience and leadership qualities will be of use.”

With the Bloaters being idle for the past two weeks, a few injuries have had time to heal so Best may find himself in the dugout once again but is sure to take some part in the game: “I haven't brought him here just to warm the bench,” Tong declared.

Tomorrow's game was re-arranged earlier this week and means the Reserves, who were due to meet Thetford Reserves at home, now have no game.

Their next match takes place tomorrow week when they entertain Norwich United Reserves, meaning they will have been six weeks without a game because of postponements.

The Under-18s' next game is on Wednesday at leaders Lowestoft Town Youth (7.45). With Wednesday's scheduled fixture at Emerald Park called off due to the state of the pitch, the Bloaters youngsters have not played a completed match since December 9.

The first team's Wroxham League Cup tie is now scheduled for Tuesday, February 9.

Yarmouth's programme for the rest of January reads: Saturday 23 Godmanchester away, Tuesday 26 Halstead home (Division One KO Trophy), Saturday 30 Brantham away.

Spectators are reminded that the grandstand is currently closed to the public for the borough council to carry out essential repairs to the roof. Covered accommodation is, however, to be found on the opposite side of the ground.

The Bloaters' new year raffle prizes include signed shirts from Manchester United, Chelsea and the club's own team amongst other football-related prizes.

Tickets are 1 each from the club, Legends Bar and the offices of Haines Watts at 31 Regent Street.
