BRADWELL shot putter Sophie Mckinna has vowed to walk away with gold from the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in spite of a shaky start to the Singapore event.

The 15-year-old qualified for Sunday's final in fifth place with a first-throw distance of 14.30m - some way below her personal best of 15.08m, which she recorded at the Aviva English Schools' Championships in July.

The Lynn Grove High School pupil failed to improve on her initial attempt - recording 14.04m, 13.94m and a no-throw as she looked to be tiring in the Far East.

But despite the slow start Mckinna's confidence is as strong as ever - revealing her below-par qualification could benefit her in the final.

“I didn't throw well at all but I am through and that's all that matters really. I was a bit nervous because I had all my family in the crowd and I really wanted to do well and make it to the final.

“I was almost a metre down on my best, but being in the final is great and I can rest up now and get a bit of training in. And while I qualified in fifth, the way my coach and I were looking at it is for me just to let the other girls burn themselves out.”

Mckinna, of the Great Yarmouth Athletics Club, has high hopes following high-profile victories at the England Under-20 Championships and Schools International.

“I am definitely looking to win. Obviously I'll be pleased with anything, but I would love to win it.”
