THE league and cup programme started with eight matches in four days.

The first was at Caister in the County Federation League, winning 7-2. The block of R Norton G Barnes and T Payne started well and with a six on the fourth end were always ahead and won 32-14.

T Connellan K Saward and R Beardall had an even game until picking up a five on the 11th end, failed to score on the next six but won the final end to win 13-12. C Deverill K Hall and E Macdonald lost by one shot 19-20.

Another win was recorded on the same evening in the Lothingland League at home to Burrage White 5�-1�.

A Cameron S Bean and M Marshall won 33-9. T Williams J Williams and D Patterson were trailing 3-14 after nine ends but won 11 of the final 12 to win 24 -16. J Fagan J Bayfield and B Goffin drew 17 all.

On Wednesday there was a reversal of fortunes at Caister in the Hansells EBA League with only one point being salvaged by the block of K Cooke, O Scarfe, C Deverill and R Beardall winning

20-18.

At home in the Lothingland League the club achieved a fine win 6-1 against Gorleston Conservatives.

D Purnell, I Rudge and S Lloyd were in excellent form, being 16-0 up after seven ends and went on to win 37-7. T Hall C Hutcheson and D Macdonald were always ahead winning 19-10. E Ward J Ward and T Bradnum had a much closer game but still won 20-17.

The first game in the Sunshine League was played at home against Oulton Broad and resulted in a win with maximum points.

R Ellis S Bean and A Cameron came from 12 all on the 11th end to finish strongly 30-16. K Brown K Briggs and K Hall finished comfortable winners 27-13. R Norton D Brown and C Hutcheson were ahead until the 17th end when the score was 12 all but they finished well 17-14.

The ladies played away in the Lovewell Blake Malta Cup at Ormesby achieving one point with the winning rink of A Baker J Williams and S Lloyd.

In the EBA Fermoy Cup the men had a tough game against premier league opponents Wymondham A.

The away block of K Saward, T Connellan, R Beardall and J Sargent were up against a strong block skipped by J Ottoway and despite winning seven of the final 11 ends lost 13-24.

At home T Williams, M Marshall, T Payne and E Macdonald competed against a block skipped by Wymondham captain G Goodrum. From 4-15 down on the 11th end they recovered to take the lead on the 20th but lost the final end to finish 18-19.

The final game of the week involved a home defeat in the Lowestoft and District League at the hands of Aldeby 1-6. The one winning rink was K Baker, F Hatton and H Clifton 20-16.

Browston Hall BC

THE men's A team playing at Fleggburgh in Division One East went down 5-1. Winning block G Downing, J Burwood, C Butcher and A Harrison.

The B team gained maximum points in their home game against Norfolk Police.

P Chaplin, B Myhill, W Good and J Kelsall 21-15; D Farman and M Parker, both 18-19 down going into the final end, both picked up two shots to win 20-19.

In the Federation Bowls League the team were promoted to Area B at the end of last season and won 7-2 at home to Stalham. Top rink J Watson, B Myhill and E Brooks

30-11, P Chaplin 19-14 and J Malcolm 13-21.

Over 100 members and guests attended presentation night in the Fountain Suite.

Winners and runners-up of the indoor leagues and club competitions were presented with their prizes and trophies by the men's president Ron Barrett and retiring ladies' president Ella Cooke.

The young player of the year award went to Grant Obsen and the Merit Award went to the men's County League A team for gaining promotion to Division One.

Hickling BC

HICKLING were off to a good start this year with the A team beating Filby 7-2 and the B team beating Hemsby by the same score.

In the Yarmouth League Hickling beat Winterton 5-2, Caister B 6-1 but lost to Caister A 2� to 4� points.

The Ladies lost their start of the season games, to Martham and Filby, both by 5-1.

Martham BC

IN the first EBA league game, Martham played Flegg Private B at home. Despite dominating the game, Martham dropped shots on the last ends for Flegg to win 65-66, 2-3 points.

Martham Ladies started their season on Wednesday with a good home win against Hickling 5-1,

56-43. Top block went to Debra Nicholson. Jane Watson and Monica Fisher winning 26-13.

The junior club will restart on Saturday, May 30, 9.30 to 11am.

Martham Bowls Club invites entries for an age 16/under open singles tournament to be held on Sunday, June 28, from 10am. Entry fee �2, refreshments available. Booking essential. Closing date June 14.

Rollesby BC

ROLLESBY opened their account in the Yarmouth League with a home game against Northgate with mixed fortunes.

J Palmer, R Austin and J Catchpole suffered a heavy 10-28 defeat and S Allen, T Wright and G Curtis lost narrowly 15-19 despite leading 14-11 after 17 ends.

Good wins on the remaining blocks of M Coots, C Johnson and E Taylor 30-13 and J Avery, A Palmer and T Avery 33-15 ensured an overall 88-75 win, points 5-2.

Travelling to local rivals, Martham BC, Rollesby were out-bowled on three rinks with only J Palmer, M Thomas and B Catchpole taking any credit with the narrowest of victories 18-17 after trailing 12-16 after 17 ends.

Overall score 49-101, points 1-6.

In the Broadland League, Rollesby visited neighbours Fleggburgh Private on the coldest of nights and found the going hard.

Wins by J Palmer, M Thomas and G Curtis 22-15 and J Avery, A Palmer and T Avery 21-15 were undone on the remaining rinks and the final result was 72-79, points 2-5.

At Ormesby Blue in the County League, Rollesby fared no better.

J Mason, A Christie and D Gammon led 12-11 after 10 ends but failed to score in the next seven ends, finally losing 14-21.

Valiant efforts by J Austin, P Taylor and R Austin could not prevent a 15-16 defeat, dropping the crucial shot on the last end.

Overall score 42-60, points 2-7.
