Penny claims club title as Gorleston’s men record a superb Hambro victory

The summer continues apace and competition season is in full swing at Gorleston Golf Club.

The Ladies’ Section held their Club Championship, playing 36 holes over two days for the Arthur Howlett Cup and Joan Baker Scratch Cup.
This year’s winner was Penny Platten with scores of 68 and 75 nett from Vera Woolnough and Sue Smith in the Arthur Howlett Cup. Heather Harvey was the runner-up in the Joan Baker Scratch Cup.
There was a brilliant win for the Men’s Hambro Team of eight in their quarter final match against Bungay and Waveney Valley. The team will now take on Haverhill Golf Club at the neutral venue of Diss.
Heather Harvey and Jackie Walsh travelled to Rochford in Essex to represent Gorleston in the regional final of the Peugeot Coronation Foursomes.
They finished a highly creditable ninth of the 66 teams competing.
The latest Midweek Stableford was won by Jack Butcher with an excellent 42 points to win Division One from Kevin Carter with 40 points. Division Two resulted in a win for Bob Haskell with 41 points on countback from Glen Lark.

The Annual Lifeboat Mixed Foursomes attracted the usual good field when 22 pairs competed in this popular charity fundraiser, raising an excellent £150 towards this good cause.
This year’s winners with a super 38 points were Rosemary and Jim Woodhouse from Marion Anderson and Martin Bullen with 37 points on countback from Anne and Mike Amos, Richard and Maureen Duckett came fourth with 36 points.
The men’s scratch Stenson Trophy Team travelled to Woodbridge Golf Club for a difficult away match over 36 holes and were beaten in the toughest of formats.
Meanwhile Norfolk Ladies County President Jo Ashmore claimed her fourth successive County Senior Championship title.
The Barnham Broom player recorded a round of 75 to finish four shots ahead of her closest challenger at Great Yarmouth and Caister.
Sharon Black from Dunston Hall was second with a gross 79 in an event that attracted a field of 39. The Handicap winner and runner-up were both from the home club - Dawn Futter and Glenda Winn with a nett 69 and 71 respectively.
