Phoenix Karate Schools students tasted success at the Ponds Forge International Arena in Sheffield at the weekend against competitors from 29 nations from as far afield as India, Malta and Egypt, for the AMA International Tournament.

Eight-year-old Zara Williams worked her way through four hard rounds to make it to the final of the girls under nine years Kumite, where she picked off her opponent with ease scoring a gakasuki punch and chungdan geri kick in the two minutes, to take the title.

She then went on to fight in the 9-10 section, where she faced an older and larger opponent from the Ukraine. Although Zara took the fight to encho-sen (extra time) she executed a round kick to the head that was not scored and her opponent took advantage and score with a gak.

Samuel Snowling, from Gorleston, has improved greatly in his last few tournaments and stormed through his first round with a 5-0 win. After defeating four more opponents he reached his first final where he lost by an Ippon kick in the last few seconds.

Frasier Thompson was in good form reaching his final where he was up against fellow AMA squad member Zak. Frasier took the fight to extra time but Zak was given the decision and Frasier had to settle for a silver. Frasier was then put into the AMA team were he had some impressive fights, triumphing over the Ukraine team in the final.

Instructor James Allan 2nd Dan was competing for the first time in three years and his first time in the adult section. James went through to the semi-finals where he came up against a member of the Karate England team. Although James put up a good fight, his opponent had such a long reach that James found it difficult to land his gaks and took the bronze medal.

The weekend also saw Instructor Vivianne Trorey 3rd Dan awarded her Continental Kata Referee and retain her Continental Kumite Judge qualifications, after a three day course of both theory and practical sessions with the WUKF chief referee Mr Sever Cucu from Romania. Vivianne will be travelling with the AMA squad to Scotland this year to officiate at the European Karate Championships.

Chief Instructor Charlie Trorey 5th Dan said: “It was an enjoyable competition and I was pleased to see all my students come away with a trophy.”
