On Sunday while most were showering their mothers with affection and gifts, a small squad of four students from Phoenix Karate Schools took a more unconventional approach to the occasion by quenching their desire to do both their families and communities proud by competing in the TKKA Yorkshire Open Championships, with grand results.

First to take to the arena was nine- year-old Zara Williams of Lowestoft, fighting in the girls 8-10 years 3rd kyu and above.

Demonstrating competence and ability far beyond her years, young Zara fought her way to the finals where she eventually won the section with a quick and timely punch to her opponent’s body in extra time, and thus set the standard high for the rest of her fellow club mates.

Continuing the success of the day was James Allan of Lowestoft fighting in the men’s 3rd kyu and above section.

Fighting in only his second tournament since his temporary, education focused retirement, James demonstrated that time does not dull experience by fighting his way through to the finals where he lost by a single point and took home the silver.

Securing the squad’s second 1st place of the day was Great Yarmouth’s Frasier Thompson, competing in the boys 13-15 years 3rd kyu and above section.

Fighting his way through many rounds with diligence, Frasier ultimately secured his title with ease. Ever eager to prove and test his ability, Frasier teamed up with fellow Phoenix man and AMA squad member Samuel Snowling and fought in the boys’ team event, where both fought valiantly, but were ultimately let down by their lack of a third fighter and were defeated in the final, securing the second silver of the day.

Phoenix Karate’s chief instructor and AMA coach Charlie Trorey 5th Dan was pleased at the results and of the standard that his students demonstrated.

“Despite the occasion it’s nice to see that both students and their families show immeasurable dedication to the continuation and bettering of their chosen art form.”
