In a tremendous tournament at the EIS Sports arena in Sheffield, 10 Phoenix Karate Schools squad members fought courageously to obtain four gold, three silver and four bronze medals.

In the Kata sections William Mortimer, Johannes Bieber and Zara Williams all gained a bronze medal in their respective events, while 10-year-old Billy Baker took a silver in his.

The Kumite started well, with Lowestoft’s Aaliyah Miller, in only her second national competition, annihilating her opponents to take a fantastic gold medal.

Shortly after, seven-year-old William Mortimer was up on the podium to receive a silver medal.

The boys 6th-4th Kyu, 10 to 12-year-old section was huge, but all three Phoenix fighters battled their way through to the semi-finals.

Oliver Whittle lost to his team-mate Johannes Bieber while William Snowling beat his opponent to make it a Phoenix final. Both boys fought with passion, but Johannes came out the winner on this occasion.

With two pools in her section 14-year-old Zara Williams had to fight hard to get through to the final, where comprehensively beat her rival with some superb techniques.

Last up for the medals was Samantha Mortimer in the 6-4th kyu adults. Despite being nervous she performed well to take a gold medal.

Tay Emmerson and Leighton Kerr were unable to get into the medals this time despite their best efforts.

Coaches for the day were Dean Snowling, Samuel Snowling and Paul Mortimer. All were helped and advised by KKO squad manager Brian Hall 6th Dan who was pleased with the showing.

Brian confirmed that three members - Zara Williams, Billy Baker and Leighton Kerr - would be in the KKO England squad to attend the World Karate Championships in Dundee in June 2018.
