Five-year-old Jack Moore surprised his parents and instructors when he competed in the East of England Karate Championships in Clacton at the weekend.

Jack, who trains with Phoenix Karate Schools, was fighting in the under four foot kumite where he was up against taller and more experienced fighters. However, his no-fear attitude and ability to learn from coach Samuel Snowling saw him through to the semi-finals, where although he lost, he put up a good fight to finish third.

Also competing were William Mortimer and Billy Baker. William took second in his Kata event and Billy took a third place in Kata.

Phoenix Instructor Vivianne Trorey, 4th Dan, was presented with the referee of the year trophy by Joe Anderson, 8th Dan, when the 2016 awards were handed out. Vivianne, a WUKF world judge, has officiated all over the Great Britain and Europe during the past year.
