HENRI Potter and Curtis Williams of Kingfisher ABC both boxed in the quarter-finals of the Royal Navy-sponsored Schoolboy's Championship on Saturday at Belhup Park.

Potter won on points in a close bout with T Garlbraith of Dagenham ABC. Potter attacked from the first bell, forcing his opponent to give ground, scoring with left jabs and good right hooks over Garlbraith's guard to the head. Garlbraith scored with his own jab but Potter had the edge.

The second round was fast and furious as both boxers tried to dominate with first one then the other getting on top. Potter was getting home with cleaner punches and finished the round again on top.

In the third and last round Garlbraith knew he was behind on points and came out with a flurry of punches.

Potter was told by his corner to expect this and meet him punch for punch. He kept to his boxing for a deserved points win and a place in the semi-finals of the schoolboys' championship in two weeks' time.

Curtis Williams lost on points to O Coats of Repton ABC. Coats is last year's champion at his weight and age, and favourite this year.

This did not worry Williams and he took the fight to Coats from the first bell, scoring with both hands. Coats, a southpaw, was scoring with his right as Williams moved in.

In the second round Williams again took the fight to his opponent with Coats again scoring with his right-hand counter punches.

Behind going into the last round, Williams gave his all and was ready to stand toe to toe and exchange punches. Eventually, Coats backed Williams into a corner with both exchanging punches.

Williams landed a solid right that rocked Coats, but to Williams and his supporters' surprise the referee gave him a standing eight count. Coats was a worthy points winner but Williams can be proud of a good performance in which he gave his best and did the club proud.
