THE week was another busy one for Great Yarmouth Cycling Club — with the season in full swing, the vast majority of riders are competing on a weekly basis across the Eastern region.

Last Saturday saw two of the Yarmouth time trialling stalwarts head down to Newmarket for the regional 25 mile ‘middle markers’ time trial.

The notoriously fast circuit often sees competitors riding some of their quickest times, and this was no different.

GYCC’s current time trialling champion, Neil Turner, rode fantastically against adverse weather conditions and some stiff competition to finish second overall, out of a full field of 120 riders, with a time of 57:34.

It was a great achievement of which his fellow club-mates were all very proud.

Veteran rider Chris Roberts set off soon after Neil and recorded a time of 1-04.00.

This was the second time in a week Chris rode this circuit, managing to record an even faster time of 1-00.20 in the regional veterans’ race.

Last weekend also saw GYCC hold their third open time trial of the season, with the Pendle 30 taking place on Sunday round the club’s Somerleyton circuit.

Despite facing fierce competition, GYCC’s Ian Sandall rode to victory with a time of 1-17.00 around the challenging course.

This was another fine performance from a Yarmouth rider during the weekend and goes to show how well the club is progressing since last year.

The club’s youth team is also shaping up for a prosperous season.

Following Ben Turner and Zak Coleman’s performances at Hog Hill in London, they are both showing some good form in the Eastern Youth Road Racing League.

At present Ben Turner is third in the U12 league, with Harrison Charlwood in fifth, Zak Coleman in seventh and Patrick Manning in ninth.

In the U10 League, Seth Houlgate is currently in fifth place with Rowan Baker a few points behind in seventh.

The performances the club’s youth team have put in at some of the region’s top racing events show the level of improvement which has resulted from the Go-Race training sessions at the Yarmouth Stadium and how dramatic an effect it has had on their racing ability.

The young GYCC riders are some of the most consistent in the region and regularly appear on the podium at events – congratulations go to all who have shown such commitment this year and are currently reaping the rewards.

GYCC will be continuing in this vein on Thursday with the next round of the Somerleyton time trial series which commences from 6pm on Market Lane, Ashby.
