Great Yarmouth Town take to the road for the first time in 2008 with a visit to Diss Town tomorrow (3pm).

For one Town player it will be a more than interesting encounter with the Bloaters' former boss, Paul Tong, now manager at Brewer's Green Lane, writes Gerry Brown.

Stewart Roach played under Tong for all of his previous spell at Yarmouth and it was well-documented at the time that there was friction between them, even though Roach notched up 122 goals over 197 games.

At the time, The Mercury reported a “troubled relationship with manager Paul Tong” which, at the time of Roach's move to Lowestoft, was said to be “at breaking-point.”

Roach said then: “I have enjoyed my time at Yarmouth but I feel disappointed as I do not think I have been under-performing. Me and Tong did not get on, really.”

Now the 29-year-old former Norwich City apprentice is ready to make his point on the field back with the Bloaters.

“I never wanted to leave in the first place, but Tong stayed and I didn't.” And Roach issued this challenge: “I am looking forward to this and I will definitely be trying to put one over him on Saturday!”

Marcus Godbold is likely to be missing after sustaining an injury against Thetford, but Tommy Hurd could return and there may also be a new name, or even two, in the Bloaters' squad.

Last Saturday's below-par performance against Thetford stunned everyone, not least the players themselves, and manager Kevin Cruickshank enforced extra training this week. “It just was not good enough,” he commented this week. “The boys put the effort in sure enough but there was no quality in their play and we gave the ball away too much.

“Credit to Thetford though. They were a top side early on when we went over there and robbed them 1-0, so this was their revenge. But it was very disappointing to concede so many. We were spectators for much of the time and we have to react more positively.”
