Caister Roma 4 Catfield 2

Caister Roma enjoyed success over Catfield for the second season running in their action replay Wiltshire Cup final at the Wellesley on Easter Monday.

After the opening 10 minutes Caister had the first chance by McCormack but Guest saved well with the ball bouncing in front of him.

Catfield then showed the more promise on several occasions as they went close. The first goal of the game came when Tom McGee nipped in at the back post to tap home.

There was a potential controversial incident for the second goal when Caister were clean through. With tugging going on by the Catfield defender and the linesman flagging, which could potentially have seen Catfield down to 10 men, the referee allowed the advantage and Jamie Lane finished to give Caister a 2-0 lead.

On the stroke of half time Caister were in dream land as Chris Salmon hit a fine shot inside the post to send his side in at half time 3-0 up.

Catfield made a change at half time as Craig Lewis replaced Karl Barnard and made an immediate impact when he hit a curling free kick into the top corner to give Catfield a glimmer of hope.

Catfield had certainly upped their intensity and put Caister under more and more pressure.

It was game on when a corner was not dealt with and Adam Thompson poked home to make it 3-2.

With time running out though Caister sealed the cup with McCormack playing in Karl Cooper and he made no mistake, firing under Guest to give his side a 4-2 victory.

Although this final probably didn’t have the drama of last season’s final it was still a very good game for the neutrals and both sides can be proud of their efforts.

The league would like to thank Michael Wiltshire, who again was on hand to present the trophy and medals. The Dennis Esherwood shield man of the match was presented to Caister captain Peter Huttley.

The Yarmouth Saturday League’s next final is the Burgess Cup final between Caister A And MK Shrubs Reserves on Friday, Apri 12 (7.30 ko).
