Great Yarmouth-Broadland started 2018 on a positive note on Satuurday by claiming their first win of the season.

They got off to an excellent start against fellow strugglers Swaffham as they took an early lead.

George Wilson put in a good run before offloading to Shaun Howley who made some good ground but was stopped just short of the line. Asa Morrison then took a short pass to crash over to open the scoring, with the try converted Stuart Murray.

The home side continued with the pressure and some good work from Ben Collings set Kiron Wilkes clear. Wilkes got within inches of the goal line and Joel Allard, who was quick in support, picked up the ball and dived over to score.

Swaffham began to test the Great Yarmouth defence and despite some excellent covering tackles from James Dogget and Jamie Murray, the visitors managed to keep the ball alive to score.

The home side slowly built an attacking platform, moving the ball from deep, and a lineout presented a perfect platform for another score. Lee Raven put in a good throw and the pack surged at the line with Nathan Bensley going over to score, with Murray adding the conversion.

Great Yarmouth kept up the attacks and Tristan Barber came close to scoring but the home side settled for a penalty from the ever reliable boot of Murray, leaving them 22-7 ahead at the interval.

The second half saw Swaffham put in some decent attacks but these were controlled and cleared well by the back three of Barber, Doggett and Murphy.

A turnover created a break as scrum-half Simon Ruddick went through a gap and an offload saw Matt Beckett take the ball over the halfway line and well into Swaffham territory. A quick ruck the ball was sent wide to Liam Haylett who raced over to score the final try of the game, leaving Great Yarmouth-Broadland with a well-earned victory.

The final game of the regular season sees the side travel to Beccles tomorrow.
