LAST Sunday was the re-arranged Norwich half marathon which as always, saw a strong turnout from the Great Yarmouth Road Runners.

Fifteen members took to the course all looking for personal bests and the chance to gauge how training is going.

As with last week’s Sliverstone half marathon, along with the Wymondham 20 miler, many of these club runners are using races as training for London.

Phil Quantrill, running well after his Seville marathon, came home first with Andy Peck finishing in a pleasing time. Next back was Steve Dady with a strong run even though he was feeling under the weather while managing to fend off the challenge Andrew Baker.

Mark Mountain also ran well, just missing out on a top 500 place. Karen Manning finished first lady home in another good time and was only slowed by an injury sustained during the race, finishing just ahead of Ian Tooley.

Another member also struck down during the race was Dave Girling, who was disappointed with his time due to pulling a calf muscle at 11 miles. He carried on to finish.

Ivan Lees was next home but will next week be at the Mud and Mayhem 10k race around Thetford forest. Carol Spong finished well and continues to work towards her London Marathon.

Silverstone half marathon runner Paul Spandler finished quicker than last week and kept ahead of fellow club runner Cathy Tooley by a couple of minutes.

Teresa Hurren finished ahead of her training partner Andrea Teasdale, also by a couple of minutes, but Marie Worrall had to be stopped at seven miles by the event doctor after suffering concussion.

Peter Spandler had a another good event, just missing out on his pb, but is getting stronger event by event.

CADETS of 221 (Great Yarmouth) Squadron, Air Training Corps, took part on Sunday, February 27 in the Norfolk & Suffolk Wing Cross-Country Championship, together with the 28 other squadrons in the wing. They competed over a 3.2 mile course set in the battle training area of RAF Barnham near Thetford.

Awards were made for the first three cadets in each race and for the top three teams in each category on combined points from finishing positions.

221 Squadron finished in second place in the youth team category, due to all three of their cadets finishing near the top, but unfortunately not making it into the top three places individually.

Wing Commander David Miller, officer commanding the Norfolk & Suffolk Wing of the Air Training Corps, presented the awards at the end of the event.

The runners from 221 Squadron were Cadet Sgt Harley Matthews, Cadet Cpl Tom Edwards and Cadet Jake Minshull.
