The East Anglian Cross Country League which started in October came to a very satisfying conclusion for the team from the Great Yarmouth Road Runners and East Norfolk College.

For the first time ever, the GYRR/ENC squad emerged victorious in both of the men's leagues.

Against formidable opposition, the combination of the younger students with their natural speed and exuberance, and the older runners with their experience and tactical nous, worked a treat and there were many exceptional performances.

Leading the way home for the students were the very impressive Damien and Micah Rogers, Jordon Reed - leading by example in his role as squad captain, Ryan Chapman, Adam Varvel and Tim Harris. The Rogers twins, Reed and Varvel represent Norfolk in tomorrow's National Schools Championships at Heaton Park in Manchester.

Making occasional appearances but nonetheless significant ones were Vincent Barrand, James Jackson, Stephen George and Jack Taylor. All of these young runners fully deserved their A League title.

With the ladies, however, it was more a question of what might have been as Josie French and Fiona Walls put in some sterling performances but were hampered by the fact that they needed a third runner to count in the team competition, though French did receive an award for being seventh best lady over the season.

Single appearances by club captain Karen Manning, Annette Carter and student Laurie Fox were, however, greatly appreciated.

Leading the way home for the more experienced male runners were John Bone, Gary Stanley, Stephen Etherington, Mike Spragg and Jeff Helmore, with Paul Westgate and Neil Sibley putting in guest appearances.

Regular or occasional, all the runners enjoyed the many different races, not least the new race at Reepham - with plenty of hot tea afterwards - and Yarmouth's own race at Fritton Woods.

League supremo Corporal Al Duncan of the RAF is to be thanked for all the hard work he puts in to organise the league and congratulated on the fine outcome, which leaves all and sundry perfectly satisfied after such an excellent season. Long may this league continue.

Numbers were swelled by 12 new visitors, and in the rather better conditions, 26 of the participants recorded their best ever times. There is no doubt that regular exercise, at whatever level, run, jog or walk, does improve fitness, and anyone can join in. See:www.parkrun.com
