STRIKER Chris Martin's dream start to the evening turned into a nightmare as Norwich City slipped to defeat at MK Dons.

The televised League One match began dramatically as the 20-year-old celebrated his recall to the side with one of the fastest goals in the club's history.

But it was Martin, 13 minutes from time, who conceded the controversial penalty that condemned the Canaries to their first league defeat under manager Paul Lambert.

With City losing midfielder Stephen Hughes and defenders Adam Drury and Michael Nelson to injury, it was a costly night.

Martin scored after just 17 seconds, his first league goal of the season, cutting inside from the left and beating keeper Willy Gueret with a low right-foot shot.

In the 13th minute, Martin could have made it 2-0 but headed wide from a cross by Jon Otsemobor.

Hughes, fouled by ex-Canary Luke Chadwick, and Drury both departed before half-time and the game turned after 57 minutes when Jason Puncheon curled in a free-kick with a perfect left-foot shot.

City immediately replaced the hobbling Nelson and Grant Holt was unlucky not to restore City's lead in the 59th minute when his header from McVeigh's cross was acrobatically tipped over by Gueret.

City increasingly came under the cosh and with 13 minutes to go, they fell behind to a disputed penalty conceded by Martin.

Martin was adjudged to have tripped Lewis Gobern and although referee Roger East initially signalled that he had won the ball, his assistant, Dave Naylor, flagged for the foul. Substitute Peter Leven rolled the resulting spot-kick past Forster.

Puncheon threatened to make it 3-1 after weaving his way through but shot straight at Forster.

Martin twice brought keeper Gueret into action in the closing minutes but was unable to grab an equaliser.
