The Yarmouth area can hail two shooting stars after a success story bridging the generation gap at the British Airgun Championships.

Pam Carter, 62, from Bradwell, was in the Great Britain team in the 1980s and has competed internationally and won medals.

Now as a pensioner she still competes for fun. She is the current Norfolk air rifle champion and the county team captain.

At the British Championship at Bisley, Surrey, she was competing in the British Masters and the Veterans events.

Rosie Evans, 15, has only been shooting match air rifle for just over a year but has been one of the top scorers in the county team. At the championships she was competing in the aggregate event and the British Ladies Junior Championship, to gain experience.

The Olympic sport of match air rifle shooting is a 60-shot match, shot in the standing position un-supported at a distance of 10 metres on indoor ranges.

The national range at Bisley had 80 electronic registering firing points set up for the championships, which attracted over 200 competitors, including double Olympic medallist Niccolo Campriani from Italy, who is living in Britain while at University.

Pam was the first on to the ranges in the Friday events for the Masters Championships and was 3rd in the qualifying but in the final shot strongly to take 2nd place and the silver medal.

Pam also shot another match course on each of the following days to take the highest score by a veteran in the aggregate to win the silver trophy and the gold medal.

Rosie had started strongly with good scores in the aggregate.

Her big day was the British Junior Ladies Championship event on the Sunday. She and her coach were happy with her shoot, as was the junior national team manager who invited the Caister High School pupil to join the Great Britain Junior Rifle Squad.

The 10-metre target has a 10 spot only 0.5 mm across, which the shot hole must touch to score 10.

The shooter has to support the rifle in the standing position and remain still and balanced for shot after shot in the one hour 45 minute long match.

Pam and Rosie are members of Norwich City Target Club but would like there to be a club local to Yarmouth.

The will and group is there to set it up but they have been unable to find a site for a new club and range at an affordable cost.

They are hoping that someone with a storage or small factory unit or any building where a permanent 10-metre range could be built in, might be able to help.
