Great Yarmouth & District Football League

THE snow showers last week put paid to any hopes of action on the last Saturday of the season before Christmas. The weather left inches of snow and all games were rightfully called off, leaving time to look at the season so far.

In Division One, MK United will go into the new year top of the pile after winning seven of their league games and drawing one. Their only defeat so far is that Norfolk Junior Cup defeat by Hellesdon.

Reedham have had a solid start which sees them second in the table, and Bob Brown will be hoping his side continues this form as they start the new year with a home Wiltshire Cup tie against Yarmouth United.

Catfield are hot on both their heels with games in hand as they still fight for the unprecedented quadruple.

Catfield have set the benchmark in the last four years in the league and will be hoping to add to their impressive list of silverware of recent times which could also include the Junior Cup.

The league wishes them and Lacon Arms all the best as it hopes one of these clubs can bring the cup back to Yarmouth.

Lacon Arms will also go into the new year fighting on all fronts as Steve Cuff has assembled a squad capable of challenging for honours.

Shrublands and Albion FC have both had very good debut seasons in Division One and will want to use this season as a stepping stone to future success.

Hemsby Reserves, Tramways and Yarmouth Peelers have had difficult starts to their seasons but all three have shown signs of improvements in recent weeks which must be pleasing for the managers of the three sides.

Bohemians' first season in the league under the present set up at the club has seen them lead into 2010 by four points in Division Two.

Having run Catfield close in the Wiltshire Cup and lost by the odd goal in the Primary Cup, Bohemians will go into the new year still fighting on three fronts - although Peter Cooke will probably take the divisional league title first and foremost.

Norfolk and Chance have had a good three months and Steve Brown has got his side into second place and still very much in the title race.

Carpathians, after finishing second from bottom last season, have shown a vast improvement this time round and sit in a respectable third while Shaun Miller's MK United Reserves are fourth and also in the hunt.

It looks as though the Division Two title is down to these four to win, but with the right results you cannot count out one or two others.

One of these sides are Feathers who, after failing to win any of their first four, have now gone on an impressive run of games without defeat. They also look forward to a clash with Albion from Division One in the Wiltshire Cup.

GY United are also up there in Division Two. They will feel they are not out of the title race yet, but one of the cup competitions looks a more realistic bet.

Martham A in October found themselves a new manager in Adrian Wells from Caister and he has looked to have steadied the ship at Martham as they have pulled off some impressive wins against good sides.

Prostar Windows will start 2010 with a Norfolk Primary Cup tie at home to William Burt. The league wishes them and MK United Reserves all the best in this competition as the league looks to register a success for the first time in years.

South Yarmouth have a young side and Lee Sweeney has got his team playing some good football. With a bit more experience and right attitude this club will be a force in a few seasons.

Paperclip, who are now an established member of the league, have shown signs of improvements of late and managed to pull themselves off the basement.

Gorleston Wanderers at the moment occupy this space but with a little more help from Lady Luck it won't be too long before they register their first three points.

It seems that Patrick Hacon and the rest of the committee at Caister have got their A team going after a turbulent first two months. Although behind on league games, these can soon be made up. And fighting in two cup competitions they will feel their season can now begin properly.

The league partially resumes on January 2 with four rearranged games, with the league back to full normality on January 9.

The league would like to wish all clubs, players, referees and any person connected with the league a merry Christmas and happy new year.
