Sophie McKinna of Great Yarmouth and District Athletics Club concluded a successful 2012 by winning the U20 Women’s Field Award from the Norfolk Athletics Association.

It has been a fantastic year for Sophie who represented Great Britain in the shot put at the World Junior Championships in Spain and finished fifth, which is the highest ever finish by a British thrower at these Championships.

Sophie also became the first British junior female thrower to throw over 16 metres in over 20 years when she won the Aviva England Outdoor Championships with a throw of 16.16 metres.

She also won a gold medal for England at the Kasta Loss Throws event in Sweden,and further gold medals at the England U20 Indoor Championships, McCain Inter County Championships, and the Norfolk County Championships.

Sophie also finished fourth at the Aviva Olympic Trials, third at the Senior Jumps and Throws Festival, second at the UKA Senior Winter Throws Trials and fifth at the Aviva Senior European Trials and UK Championships.

Sophie finished the season as the number one GB junior thrower and third in the GB Senior rankings. Her best throw of the season was 16.23 metres.
