Sophie Mckinna, of Great Yarmouth Athletics Club, travelled to the Isle of Man to represent England in the shot-put at the Youth Commonwealth Games.

Sophie entered the competition ranked as number one in the Commonwealth, but faced stiff competition from the Australian and New Zealand throwers. Sophie threw 14.75 metres to secure the gold medal and the title of Youth Commonwealth champion. It was her last competition of a fantastic season that has included a silver medal at the World Youth Championships, gold at the Aviva U20 Championships, and a bronze medal at her first senior championships, beating heptathlete Jessica Ennis in the process.

She also made history at the World Youth Championships becoming the first ever British female to win a medal in a global shot competition, and broke the British record in the U20 England Indoor Championships with a throw of 15.71 which produced another gold medal.
