The Sportshall Athletics for the Great Primaries drew to a close last week with the Year 5 and 6 finals. Held at Lynn Grove High School, they consisted of the four winning schools from the local heats held throughout November. Sportshall Athletics involves foam javelins, speed bounce and standing long jump amongst the six field events, with the event concluding with 10 races, including relays and hurdles.

Pupils have been training at Woodlands for the event for six weeks, and have shown great dedication and commitment, achieving a high-quality competition standard.

The Year 5 final saw Moorlands, Cliff Park, Martham and Woodlands compete in an exciting but at times tense atmosphere, with pupils picking up points for each events ranging from one to eight. Martham were slightly ahead after the field events section. But it was the races section of the evening that saw Woodlands catch up with their opponents. After winning each of the 10 races, Woodlands went on to win the competition by 50 points, a large winning margin considering the low scoring system.

Pupils received an athletics goody bag and a trophy and have been encouraged to further their talents at the Great Yarmouth Athletic Club.

The Year 6 competition, featuring Priory School, with Cliff Park, Martham and Woodlands, saw a similar trend of results. Once again Martham were in front after the field events. However this time, despite a valiant effort Woodlands narrowly missed out on a memorable double victory by a handful of points to Martham.

This has been an extremely exciting series of nights, featuring some very good young athletes at the host high schools.

Thanks go to John Pamplin and representatives of Great Yarmouth Athletics Club.
