Sportshall winners

Last week saw the culmination of the Great Yarmouth Schools Sportshall Athletics programme.

This competition, organised by Great Yarmouth Borough Council's Sports Development Service, East Norfolk School Sports Partnership and Great Yarmouth and District Athletic Club, allows young athletes the chance to compete in a variety of athletic disciplines, but inside.

Sportshall Athletics was conceived to allow young children the opportunity to keep active and challenged throughout the winter.

The local version Yarmouth gives the children challenges in six different hall-based tasks, as well as a full and exciting running programme.

The hall-based activities are speed bounce, bench step-ups, y shuttle, standing long jump, seated ball throw and turbo javelin throw. These are followed by a programme of 13 races, which include individual events and team relays.

Oriel High School staged both the Year Five and the Year Six finals.

In a close contest for the Year Five trophy Martham Primary took the first prize by one point from Woodlands.

The Year Six contest was again very exciting but here Martham were the winners from Woodlands but with a 12.5 point margin.

Locally there were 14 schools competing at Sportshall in Year Five and 16 schools at Year Six which meant there were over 300 children taking part in this activity.

Year Five result: Martham 196, Woodlands 195, Moorlands 175, North Denes 125.

Year Six result: Martham 199, Woodlands 186.5, Cliff Park 178.5, North Denes 128.
