ON Sunday the Lovewell Blake Malta Cup League finals were held on the Britannia Greens in Great Yarmouth, with Acle A playing Caister and Freethorpe A playing Gorleston, both games starting in dull, damp conditions but the sun coming out for the final, which again went to Acle.

After 10 ends Acle were 12 shots up and Freethorpe A 13 shots up, but then the sky turned black, the rain poured down and all ran for cover.

For an hour players sheltered in the clubroom, but did keep the barman busy and eventually returned to the greens to continue play.

The Gorleston-Freethorpe game now became close and very competitive, with Freethorpe taking the honours by nine shots.

Scores: S Smith 13, R Parker 24; M Hunn 18, R Church 11; D Myhill 13, J Harris 20; M King 15, R Mallett 13.

The Acle-Caister game then saw two of the Acle blocks dominate as they went on to win by 18 shots.

Scores: D Rowsell 25, B Wymer 10; A Siely 32, T Applegate 14; D Goodley 13, G Punchard 26; R Meeks 15, B Harris 17.

By 1pm the rain had cleared and Freethorpe Ladies team, who won the Ladies Lovewell Blake Malta Cup League, played a representative team from the rest of the league and the sun came out as Freethorpe won by four shots.

Each player was presented with a unique Yarmouth Pottery memento from Arthur Savoury.

The men's final began at 2.30pm in bright, warm sunshine and spectators gathered to enjoy the game.

Acle had won this trophy for the past four years and were hot favourites but after five ends Freethorpe were one shot up and a surprise looked on the cards.

However, by 10 ends Acle had taken the lead and were seven shots up, then dominated, winning 75 to 53.

Scores: R Meeks 22, J Harris 14; D Rowsell 24, R Mallett 9; D Goodley 16, R Church 15; A Siely 13, R Parker 15.

The cup and cheques were presented by Russell Leggatt from Lovewell Blake. The league chairman Bimbo Meeks thanked the Great Yarmouth club for their hospitality, the league secretary Derek Webster for his hard work and presented a bottle to umpire Jimmy Moore.
