The John Smith's Friendly Darts League finals and presentations

A packed Merlins Club was treated to some very good darts play.

Karen Page and Elaine Davy fought out a classic Ladies' Singles final.

Elaine set the pace with a 140, 85, 100 but Karen came back with 125, 85, 95, and both girls reached the finish double together. But having first-dart advantage Elaine took her chance well to win the first leg.

The second leg was similar in reverse. Karen opened with 121, 100, 85, 85 and Elaine stuck close to her with 100, 85, 92, 68 but Karen had first shot at the double and she finished first time.

Elaine started the final leg with a 100, 85 but Karen set off with 121, 100, 95 and opened up a gap as Elaine had two consecutive scores of only 25.

It looked all over as Karen neared the finish double but then she faltered with her next six darts and Elaine came back with 100, 85 to reach a shot out.

Both girls then had nine darts each at the double before Elaine stepped up to clinch the title 2-1 with her next shot.

Jon Wynn was defending his title against Jim Thompson and an upset was on the cards.

Both players set off at a terrific pace with tons and 140 scores rattling the board. Jon took the first leg in 21 darts and Jim followed by taking the second in 20 darts to set up a thrilling final leg.

Sixteen darts each and both players were in sight of the finish double and both had a chance to win the match, but as Jon missed his chance Jim stepped up to coolly shoot out and wrest the title from Jon's grasp.

Dennis Langton was appearing in his first final when he partnered Karen Page in the Drawn Mixed Pairs final against Stuart Mason and Sarah Lillie

Dennis supported Karen well and in a close encounter they struck the doubles at the first time of asking to win 2-0.

Phil Harrison and Martin Galea found Alex Betts and Jon Wynn too hot to handle as the latter pair retained their Chosen Pairs title, winning 2-0, but Martin got his revenge when he partnered Chris Davy in the Men's Drawn Pairs final as they went on to beat Jon Wynn and Dennis Langdon

2-0.

Elaine Day went on to complete a hat-trick when she partnered Celia Gray in the Chosen Mixed Pairs against Tina Holland and Liz Thompson and won 2-0.

Then playing with husband Chris she went on to win the Chosen Mixed Pairs beating Beth Harrison and Martin Galea 2-0.

Karen Page and Maxine Elderfield beat Sally Smith and Tina Holland 2-0 to take the Drawn Ladies' Pairs title.

Shocks galore were handed out in the Knockout Cup and Knockout Plate team games.

In the plate Hotshotz beat the Camden Tavern 2-0 but met their masters in a hard-fought close encounter second round, going down 2-1 to the Merlins B 2-1.

Merlins A in the other Plate semi-final had a thriller with the Lady Haven and with the match finely balanced and both teams on a double in the decider up stepped Kara Ward to hit x3 to seal a spot in the final.

In the Knockout Cup Lichfield B tore up the form book by beating the Ferryboat 2-1 and then going on to beat the Magdalen by the same score to reach the final.

Then the pre-tournament favourites and cup holders Albert Tavern were dumped out 2-1 by an on-form Grange team ,but they went to be beaten 2-1 in the final by surprise team of the night the Lichfield B 2-1.

The all-Merlins (A v B) Knockout Plate final produced a close game and but for the fine heroics of young James Bradbury it may have gone to a third and final leg.

The A-team led 1-0 and both teams were locked in a dour struggle when young James stepped up to score 108 and open up a gap that the B-team never closed and with his next turn at the oche stepped up to clinch the final double out and win the match for his team.

For the first time a Junior Open Singles competition took place and the final between Callum Bradding and James Bradbury was so very close that it had a large audience totally enthralled right to the very last dart. Both players had a shot at the finish double in a third-leg thriller before Callum shot out at his second attempt.

Jodie Bradbury made a good impression in reaching the semi-final and received the third place trophy. These young players put on a great show for the future of our young up- and-coming darts players.
