Support your local cricket clubs, urges veteran Nicholls

PUBLISHED: 16:53 15 June 2012

Veteran Yarmouth cricketer Keith Nicholls is urging people to support their local clubs and “enjoy the benefits of this great sport.”

Nicholls, who has played for 40 years, was dismayed to read in Mercury Sport that Halvergate have only one team remaining after deciding to pull out of the Norfolk Alliance and Hemsby have withdrawn their A side from the Norfolk League.

Keith, a consistent run-getter over the years, commented: “I have personally played local cricket for 40 years and know how club cricket has changed and how difficult it can be to recruit players, particularly youngsters.

“However I also know the pleasures and benefits of playing club cricket and therefore take this opportunity of urging any potential players of whatever age or experience to contact one of our local clubs. The game needs you!”

He said his team, who play in the Norfolk League, are also keen to recruit players.

“Our first team are in Division One where the standard is good, while our second team play in Division Four allowing us to develop young talents and offering others the opportunity to continue to play competitive cricket at a reasonable standard and into ‘old age’.

“In addition we participate in the Great Yarmouth Midweek League thereby giving all members an opportunity to play at least once a week. In the winter we have indoor nets and coaching. Consequently we are able to cater for all.

“To all interested in playing the game I urge you to join a club and enjoy the benefits of this great sport. I certainly wish Halvergate and Hemsby all the very best as they restructure their clubs.
