A trio of top rods from the Yarmouth Browning Pownalls match group went carp crazy and totalled nearly 1,000lbs of fish during a two-day event at Boddingtons Reservoir, near Peterborough.

A trio of top rods from the Yarmouth Browning Pownalls match group went carp crazy and totalled nearly 1,000lbs of fish during a two-day event at Boddingtons Reservoir, near Peterborough.

As members of the organising North Walsham Kingfisher Club Pownalls' Mark Seaman and Denis Goodwin invited Mark Eales along as a guest, and all three filled the top

three places on both days, writes Roy Webster.

On day one Seaman totalled 170lbs, Eales 118lbs and Goodwin 112lbs. Day two produced a massive 257lb for Eales while Goodwin finished with 155lbs and Seaman 149lb.

Eales, a senior staff man at the Pownalls Regent Road tackle and bait centre, said he was most grateful to be invited to “the best weekend's fishing of my life”.

He added: “It was two great days for the three of us and we could not go wrong.”

As forecast, the individual freshwater championship on the River Bure on Sunday was roach dominated.

The winner was well-known David Gooch, of the Nisa Feeder match squad who bagged 16lbs of mostly small roach from peg No. 1 in the shadows of the old St Benet's.

Runner-up was another Nisa Feeder man Nick Larkin with 12lb 14oz from peg 5, then came Yarmouth sportsman Brian Weavers with 9lb 15oz from peg 40 opposite the South Walsham pump.

There was not a single quality bream put on the scales, the only fish of the species tiny skimmers. Thus it must be assumed the great shoals of slabs that produced such prolific catches during the summer have moved out of the river into their winter quarters on South Walsham broad or further upstream to escape imminent salt tides.

It is a similar story from the River Bure at Upton where the top catch in the Brundall Club event was 14lbs of roach.

Local clubs who visited the match lakes were Stalham at Colton where the result was D Agass and R Austrin both 48lb 15oz then D Dearman with 30lb 14oz. Sportsmans at Taswood finished M Bunn 41lb, G Thompson 30lb 8oz J Hammond 26lb. Carol Waldren's event at Melton Ponds was a triumph for her husband Alan with 120lb 14oz, Carol was runner-up with 87lb 12oz then T Carter 81lb 1oz.

On the big carp waters, numbers of anglers are falling away but Caister experts Jason and Darren Stamp tempted a number of ghost carp on their favoured Taswood Lake, the top three coming in at 29lb 13oz, 24lb 15oz and 24lb 1oz.

Quality pan-size whiting are teeming along local beaches.

The first round of the Sam Hook League staged on the town's South Beach on Monday produced scores of sizeable specimens, with the top catch 11lb 7oz for Kelvan Chilvers (Pakefield) followed by Gorleston's Clyde Leggatt with 9lb 9oz and Wayne Perring of Lowestoft with 9lb 7oz.

Anglers fishing at Hopton are reported to have bagged nearly 40 whiting a session, and with the sea becoming rougher and stirred up by the brisk north-westerlies, prospects for day-time anglers for whiting and indeed small codling are rated excellent. In addition, sizeable autumn bass are still feeding, with Gorleston and Hopton as well as the river estuary worth a try.

This sport highlights again the potential value of securing angling access to the new outer harbour.

The stopwatch to begin negotiations with the appropriate authorities to secure the fishing is still ticking so perhaps angling clubs should unite now and initiate discussions.
