Football: Great Yarmouth and Gorleston bid to keep good runs going

Great Yarmouth Town and Gorleston will both be attempting to maintain promising runs in the Premier Division of the Thurlow Nunn League at the weekend.

The Bloaters are currently unbeaten in five, with three wins and two draws to their name, while their neighbours have put together three straight wins under Stewart Larter, who returned to the club in October and initially struggled for results.

Great Yarmouth are at home to lowly Haverhill Borough tomorrow afternoon while the Greens travel to Long Melford, with both games kicking off at 3pm.

Gorleston are 14th in the table on 39 points following their 2-0 win over Fakenham on Tuesday evening in a rearranged game while the Bloaters are four points behind them in 17th, having played the same number of games.

Great Yarmouth joint manager Adam Mason was delighted with last Saturday’s home win over Godmanchester, who had been on an excellent run of form.

“That was a professional performance,” he said. “We had a plan and the players executed it perfectly. There wer solid performances all over from us, yes we needed Jack Whatmough and the back four to play well but you have to expect that against a side that haven’t lost in the league for three months. We are delighted, we had four 17-year-olds in the squad again and our unbeaten run goes on.”

Great Yarmouth Reserves turned in a fine performance to keep up their challenge for promotion from Anglian Combination Division Four when they beat Mulbarton Reserves 6-0 with goals from Micky Vincent (4), Sam Jones and Scott Bishop.

Gorleston Reserves were beaten for only the third time this season in Division Three when they went down 2-1 at Redgate Rovers.

The Bloaters’ second string are away to Bungay Reserves tomorrow while their Gorleston counterparts are at home to Hingham Athletic.
