Top snooker players for Hopton

Four of snooker’s top players head to Hopton this weekend for the Premier League Snooker play-offs.

In one of the toughest league sections for many years, 2008 finalist Mark Selby, former world champion Mark Williams and Chinese star Ding Junhui all fell by the wayside.

It means eight-time champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, defending Premier League champion Shaun Murphy, 2003 Premier League champion Marco Fu and current world No 1 Neil Robertson will do battle in a mouth-watering line-up at Potters Leisure Resort.

Barry Hearn, chairman of promoters Matchroom Sport, said: “We are delighted to be bringing the play-offs back to Potters for the third time. There is always a great atmosphere around the place at Premier League finals weekend and I know the players all enjoy competing there.

“The Premier League has always been one of those titles that top players want on their CVs and that will guarantee a fabulous weekend of snooker at Potters.”

Robertson clinched his place with a dramatic 4-2 win over Murphy in Llandudno, despite arriving at Venue Cymru only 20 minutes before he was due to start.

“In some ways I didn’t deserve to get through due to my preparation. I’m delighted to have got through, but this will give me a kick up the backside.

O’Sullivan and reigning world champion Robertson go head-to-head in tomorrow (Saturday) evening’s opening first to five frames semi-final, before Fu and Murphy meet – all of which means a repeat of last year’s final between Murphy and bookies favourite O’Sullivan could be on the cards.

Sunday’s final is first to seven frames.
