Tough battle for bowlers at Woodlands

Acle Bowls Club’s top-of-the-table clash away to Woodlands was never going to be easy.
Lynne Cannell, Edna Land and Jenny Kirby trailed 0-13 but a five on the ninth and a seven on the 11th saw them win 17-14. Joy Pearson, Lillian Barber and Elaine Cole scored a five on the final end to draw 14 each. Geraldine Reeve’s block lost 10-16 and Mel Haylett’s block dropped eight shots in five ends and lost 8-13. Result: 49-57 (1½-6½).
On Saturday the Ladies’ A entertained County Arts. Jenny Ramsbottom, Amy Barker and Marie Morton won 24-5, Margaret Arnold, Andrea Morton and Geraldine Reeve won 13-10, Shirley Lettice, Brenda Cole and Mel Haylett finished 14-9 and Barbara Meek’s block lost 16-19. Result: 67-43 (7-1).
The Ladies’ B team wrapped up their season with another win to complete a successful year by winning the league. At home to Shotford B on Friday Anita Nelson, Pam Symes and Margaret Shields won 19-3, Pam Hollis, captain Sue Moore and Rose Yaxley ran out 21-10 winners, Caroline Hines, Sandra Faircloth and Julia Crosby lost 14-15 and Sandra Edmonds, Elaine Donovan and Jackie Smith lost 10-11. Result: 64-49 (6-2).
The Men’s A moved top of the league with a 6-1 win at home to Beccles. Jim Fruin, John Sparrow, Ivan Borrett and Ian Wones lost 28-15, Mark Elliott, Roy Himpleman, Graham Punchard and Jason Roope ran out 23-21 winners, David Cole, Geoff Ramsbottom, Tony Dunton and Danny Ramsbottom won 24-10 and rink of the day were Ian Anderson, Matty Sparrow, Simon Elliott and Jamie Howlett who won 31-11 against another Suffolk skip Ben Harber.
Away to top-of-the-table Shotford, the Men’s B were in confident mood. John Marshall, Ryan Garman, Paul Webb and Barney Wymer won 27-10. Sid Siely, Arthur Jolliffe, Bill Downie and Brian Grint scored two fours to be 15-3 up at 10, then 23-4 at 15 followed by a five on the 17th. They dropped a five on the 20th but romped home 29-15. Johnstone Mackie, Dennis Edwards Alan Benson-Nutt and Josh Baxter were 16-8 at 10, scored a five on the 11th and were 28-11 at 15 and relaxed as they won 29-20. Wyn Willimott’s rink were 7-19 down at 15 but only lost one more end and finished 14-21. Result: 99-66 (6-1).
