IN the second round of the Norfolk Junior Cup, in a tightly-fought defensive match, Broadland crossed the try line three times in the final 20 minutes but each try was disallowed.

The wind and sleet were major factors, the ball almost exclusively confined to the Breydon Water end of the pitch.

Broadland played into the wind in the first half and from Swaffham's first kick it became obvious that Broadland were going to be digging in defensively. The ball sailed 50 yards in the breeze and landed well inside the Broadland

22 metre line.

Full-back Jake Sewell attempted a kick into the wind. Although it made touch, it travelled no further than 10 metres and Broadland realised they were going to have run the ball out.

Broadland defended well but sustained pressure saw Swaffham go over for a score (converted).

Swaffham continued to pin Broadland back through kicks and it was through the hard running from No 8 Rye Bilyard and prop Richard Bristo that Broadland were able to move the ball out. Swaffham moved in close and scored (converted).

Broadland rallied well and some dazzling play from wing Joe Payne saw him break wide and down the wing. Scrum-half Simon Ruddick controlled play three metres away from the Swaffham line and lock Royce Chiddle picked and powered his way over from short range (converted Lightfoot). Broadland trailed 14-7 at the half.

Broadland, with the wind behind them, saw a deep kick misjudged by the Swaffham fullback. Flanker Jamie Alfshinpour was up quick, put a boot on the ball and sent it over the Swaffham goal line.

Alfshinpour won the race to the ball and dived over to score (unconverted).

Broadland bombarded the visitors with high balls. Captain Matt Beckett went over the try line but the referee did not have a clear view and it was disallowed.

Alfshinpour went over with a second kick and chase but the referee adjudged a knock on. Wing Ben Collings went over and again the referee brought back play.

Broadland brought on Ryan Gallie and Sam Rhodes. Rhodes had a superb cross field run, breaking three tackles before being dragged down. Swaffham, despite being camped inside their own 22 metre line for most of the half, did not concede a kickable penalty.
