Former champion jockey Ryan Moore almost sparkled at a sunny Great Yarmouth on Tuesday but after two superb winners became the bookies’ rather than the punters’ favourite when beaten on odds-on favourite Chiefdom Prince in the feature race.

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute’s horses have returned to form recently and Complexion, the 5-2 favourite ridden by Moore, easily won the Stanley Threadwell Memorial Fillies Handicap over the straight mile.

The three-year-old moved through from last to first to beat her eight rivals so easily that favourite backers were counting their winnings two furlongs out.

Moore was in great form in the following maiden stakes over seven furlongs. There were four in a line a furlong out but Moore powered home the Noel Quinlan trained Our Gal to complete a double in a photo finish.

There was plenty of drama at the start with two of the eight horses, Tlaad and the Willie Carson owned Debbie Doo, being withdrawn after becoming unruly in the stalls.

So the script was written for Moore to complete a treble on the 4-9 Stoute-trained favourite in the feature race, the Take A Test Drive With M R King Handicap.

Moore dropped Chiefdom Prince out early on but when asked to take a hand, the colt laboured and could only finish fourth, well adrift of winner Below Zero, ridden by Kieren Fallon, who edged out Capone in a photo finish.

Favourite backers had been given a great start to the day thanks to jockey Jamie Spencer in the opener. He squeezed odds-on Emirates Art home to beat My Sharona by a short head in a photo finish.

Captainrisk, a winner for Hingham trainer Christine Dunnett a week ago, couldn’t repeat that feat under a six-pound penalty in the Nelson Museum Handicap over six furlongs, the prize going to the William Jarvis trained Katie’s Secret, well ridden by Dane O’Neill, who brought the filly through on the outside from a long way back.

Crowd pleaser Hayley Turner delivered in the penultimate race over five furlongs, getting the wonderfully named Bouncy Bouncy home, while in the last an enterprising ride by Jack Mitchell produced a win for Snow Hill.

The next meeting at Great Yarmouth is next Monday.

Rough Rock was on the ball again at Great Yarmouth racecourse on Monday for Norwich City Football Club director Michael Foulger.

The 6-1 horse staged a repeat performance of its victory 18 days earlier at the course.

Again ridden by leading female jockey Hayley Turner, Rough Rock gained his sixth success at the seaside course in taking the seven furlong M R King Peugeot and Suzuki Lowestoft Handicap.

Punters had started well when Kieren Fallon won the opener on the Mark Tompkins trained Rayvin Black. Victory was never in doubt for the 6-5 favourite.

The feature race of the day, the 3.15 race, went to the John Gosden trained three-year-old colt Robemaker, ridden by William Buick, who survived a steward’s enquiry to keep his half a length victory over Arabian Heights. Buick did receive a one-day suspension for careless riding in allowing his mount to drift left.

The race was testament to the course’s reputation with Sir Michael Stoute, Ed Dunlop, Luca Cumani, Sir Mark Prescott and Clive Brittain, a quintet of top trainers, all represented.

Closest finish of the day saw William Carson force home Golden Compass to win the six furlong sprint, the Pleasurewood Hills Handicap, from Dixie Gwalia by a neck. There was an upset in the parade ring before the race with East Harling trainer George Prodromou’s Nettis unseating jockey Sophie Silvester and being withdrawn.

Ryan Moore rode Top Diktat to win the nine furlong handicap, before the final races were won by the appropriately named Thundering Home, ridden by Matthew Davies and Colinca’s Lad, ridden from the front by Rosie Jessop in the closing apprentice handicap.
